I worried that my request for simple school supplies wouldn't generate the kind of interest that a flashy new tech gadget or a trip to an exciting locale might. So, I was particularly heartened to see that so many of you acknowledge and agree that without the essentials; pencils, notebooks, etc., students would have no foundation on which to build. \r\n\r\nI'm proud that my beautiful, intelligent, unique, warm-hearted, and inquisitive teenage learners were each able to start the year with an equal footing in Chemistry. These interactive science notebooks have been utilized to gather measurements and lab data, work out high-level concepts, document their learning objectives, and summarize their learning. But another skill embedded in this simple practice is one that so many students can benefit from: developing strategies for the executive function skills that will serve them in any post-secondary path. Having their education disrupted by COVID and virtual classes during the formative late-elementary and middle school years has resulted in significant gaps in organization, assignment tracking, time management, and even penmanship! I'm seeing substantial gains in our students in these areas, in addition to increased self-confidence in their scholastic and logistical skills.\r\n\r\nI hope you enjoy these snapshots of our classroom this year and know that these students have had the very best experience in our classroom laboratory because of you.
