Our Kindness Bench in memory of Mrs. Mariano was installed at the end of September due to construction over the summer at our school site, and we held a commemoration ceremony on Friday, October 3rd. We invited Mrs. Mariano's family to attend the commemoration, which was very moving for everyone. The love in the air was palpable, and Mrs. Mariano's family was so appreciative for the thoughtful way the school is commemorating the memory of Gina. \r\n\r\nGina loved Phillips Elementary School and was not only a beloved teacher here, but had attended Phillips Elementary School as a child. She made sure she helped her students feel better when they were feeling sad by providing them lots of love and support, especially during recess time. We would often find her at the lunch benches, supporting students who may have needed extra TLC. Because of this, we wanted to honor her legacy of kindness with a Kindness Bench in her memory, and chose the color pink as this was her favorite color. \r\n\r\nThe kindness bench will serve a very special purpose. When students are at recess and feeling left out or alone, they can sit on the bench, and that is a signal to others to invite them to join their game or activity. The bench is a beautiful symbol of what being a true Phillips Eagle is all about: showing kindness to others.\r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for sharing your kindness to our school site by providing us with the funds to purchase and install our kindness bench. It will always be such a beautiful testament that there is kindness all around us.","fullyFundedDate":1736053882366,"projectUrl":"project/friendship-bench-in-memory-of-beloved-te/8903618/","projectTitle":"Friendship Bench in Memory of Beloved Teacher Gina Mariano","teacherDisplayName":"Sra. The comfy chair has become a beloved spot for reading, offering a cozy and inviting space where students can immerse themselves in books. This small addition has made independent reading time more enjoyable and encouraged students to view reading as a relaxing and rewarding activity. It has also served as a motivator for positive behavior, with students excited to earn time in the special chair as part of classroom incentives.\r\n\r\nThe stools and book cart have improved the efficiency and accessibility of learning in meaningful ways. The stools allow students to participate in small group activities with greater ease, creating a collaborative and flexible space for focused discussions and hands-on learning. Meanwhile, the book cart has streamlined the process of transporting books to and from the school library, ensuring that students have regular access to a diverse selection of reading materials. This resource has made it easier to rotate and organize books, keeping the classroom library fresh and engaging for all learners. Together, these donations have helped create a more comfortable, organized, and student-centered environment, supporting both academic growth and a love for learning.","fullyFundedDate":1723640161954,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-furniture/8584350/","projectTitle":"Classroom Furniture","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Simmons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6541581_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683161091771","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mssimmonsclass"},{"teacherId":6541581,"projectId":8399529,"letterContent":"Flexible seating has had a transformative impact on the dynamics of the third-grade classroom, creating an environment where students can tailor their learning spaces to meet their individual needs. The availability of wobble stools allows students to release excess energy in a controlled way while staying engaged with their work. These stools provide subtle movement that helps students, especially those who struggle with sitting still, to focus without disrupting the class. By offering this alternative, students gain the freedom to choose what helps them work best, fostering both independence and self-awareness.\r\n\r\nThe integration of fidget toys during independent work time has further enhanced students' ability to stay focused and manage their attention. These small tools provide a quiet outlet for restless hands, helping students channel their energy into something productive rather than becoming distracted. For example, students who might otherwise tap their pencils or fidget with their desks can instead use a stress ball or a silent spinner, maintaining their concentration on the task at hand. This simple yet effective approach has not only increased individual focus but has also contributed to a calmer and more focused classroom environment.\r\n\r\nOverall, flexible seating and fidget tools have created a classroom culture that values and supports diverse learning needs. By providing options for movement and sensory engagement, students feel empowered to take ownership of their learning experience. This approach promotes equity, as all students—regardless of their energy levels or learning styles—are given tools to help them succeed. The result is a more inclusive, engaging, and productive learning environment where students feel respected and supported in their journey to achieve their best work.","fullyFundedDate":1715952577639,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating/8399529/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Simmons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6541581_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683161091771","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mssimmonsclass"},{"teacherId":6541581,"projectId":8272055,"letterContent":"Tactile math tools have transformed the way third graders engage with and understand key mathematical concepts. By allowing students to physically manipulate objects like fraction circles, base-ten blocks, and geared clocks, these tools provide a hands-on learning experience that bridges abstract ideas and real-world application. For instance, when learning about time, students use geared clocks to physically move the hour and minute hands, making the concept of elapsed time more intuitive and accessible. This tangible interaction eliminates confusion and fosters a deeper comprehension of how minutes and hours relate to one another.\r\n\r\nFractions, often perceived as a challenging concept for young learners, become approachable and even exciting with tactile tools. Fraction circles enable students to visualize and compare parts of a whole, laying the groundwork for understanding equivalence and addition of fractions. The ability to physically divide shapes and combine fractions helps students see relationships and patterns, fostering confidence and curiosity. Similarly, base-ten blocks bring place value and subtraction to life, allowing students to decompose numbers, regroup, and solve problems step by step. These tools not only support accuracy but also build a stronger conceptual foundation, ensuring students grasp the \"why\" behind the procedures.\r\n\r\nThe daily use of these tools has cultivated an engaging, interactive classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and ask questions. By integrating tactile materials into nearly every math lesson, the teacher has created a learning space where students can actively participate and collaborate with peers. The hands-on approach has proven particularly beneficial for diverse learners, accommodating different learning styles and needs. As a result, students approach math with enthusiasm and confidence, equipped with the skills and understanding to tackle increasingly complex problems as they progress.","fullyFundedDate":1710715302156,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-math-learning/8272055/","projectTitle":"Hands on Math Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Simmons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6541581_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683161091771","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mssimmonsclass"},{"teacherId":1648333,"projectId":8935824,"letterContent":"How is the technology helping your students learn?\r\n\r\nThis printer is helping my students be able to publish and print out their writing, artwork, and even their certificates and awards.
