Many of these students work hard each day to manage emotions, maintain focus, and regulate behavior in order to participate in learning. The iPad mini has become a consistent and intentional part of regular counseling sessions. It is used to support calming routines, guided breathing, and quiet focus activities that help students practice self-regulation skills in a familiar and comfortable format. These routines also help students feel more settled and prepared to return to class.\r\n\r\nMy students have been especially engaged because they were included in deciding how the iPad would be used during counseling. We explored calming apps together and selected color-by-number activities as a shared favorite. While calming music plays, students focus on coloring and practice mindfulness in a relaxed and supportive environment. Many times they commented on how quickly session time passes which reflects their level of engagement. The iPad is also used as part of regular counseling to support focus and emotional balance throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nSeveral of my students have responded particularly well to the iPad including those who struggle with attention, anxiety, or expressing emotions verbally. For these students, digital coloring and calming activities provide a safe and creative outlet. Students who arrive to counseling feeling overwhelmed are able to settle more quickly and remain engaged for longer periods of time. Other students are also more receptive to learning mindfulness techniques through the iPad whereas before, they did not want to participate in the activities. As the school year continues, the iPad will be used to expand creative and expressive activities within counseling sessions to further support social emotional growth.","fullyFundedDate":1758790494408,"projectUrl":"project/digital-calm-supporting-special-educati/9739788/","projectTitle":"Digital Calm: Supporting Special Education Students with Technology","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. C.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3476867"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4152","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":785,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":31,"percentAsian":13,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":91.7,"schoolId":4152,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Valley View Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Valley View Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/mount-diablo-unified-school-district/valley-view-middle-school/4152"}
