Using The House on Mango Street, students read and annotated a selection of powerful vignettes, then came together in small groups to explore guiding questions such as: What does Esperanza's name represent about family, culture, and independence? and What stereotypes do outsiders have about her community, and how do those perceptions limit opportunity? These discussions helped students think critically about how environment and identity shape a person's sense of self, dreams, and belonging.\r\n\r\nYour support also allowed students to build bridges between the themes they uncovered in Sandra Cisneros's work and those found in The Other Wes Moore. By analyzing both texts, students examined how fate, opportunity, and personal choice intersect—often in ways that mirror their own lived experiences. They were able to compare how Esperanza and the two Wes Moores navigate the expectations placed on them, confront stereotypes, and imagine futures beyond the limitations of their surroundings. Because of your contribution, students experienced literature not just as stories on a page, but as meaningful pathways for understanding themselves and the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1755723228689,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-students-through-stories-tha/9505210/","projectTitle":"\"Empowering Students Through Stories That Reflect Their Lives\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Avalos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10096330_orig.jpg?crop=3200,3200,x0,y256&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753659094616","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10096330"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_122509","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":74,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":40,"percentWhite":18,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":87.7,"schoolId":122509,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wish Academy High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wish Academy High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/wish-academy-high-school/122509"}
