My second graders are learning to pause, ask questions, make predictions, draw inferences, and explain their ideas using evidence from the story. Because chapter books develop characters and events over time, students must remember details, make connections across chapters, and revise their thinking as they discover new information.\r\n\r\nThis is my third year teaching nearly two-thirds of my class, and I have watched these students grow from recognizing environmental print to reading and discussing chapter books. They love discussing the details within the stories and sharing their different interpretations. They are learning how to navigate critical conversations by listening carefully, asking questions, respectfully agreeing or disagreeing, building upon their classmates' ideas, and returning to the text to support their thinking.\r\n\r\nAs part of the second-grade writing standards, students must also write about the stories they have read. The books' colorful illustrations help them piece together the sequence of events, recall important details, understand the characters' actions and feelings, and make meaning from the text. Students use this understanding to write thoughtful responses supported by details from the story. They are learning that strong readers do more than read the words—they think, discuss, and write about their understanding.\r\n\r\nThe excitement has spread beyond our lessons. Students use bookmarks to save their places, eagerly anticipate the next chapter, and visit the school library during recess to check out more chapter books. Even the students who are new to our class have caught the excitement and joined our community of readers and thinkers. Thank you for providing books that have helped my students become more thoughtful, confident, and enthusiastic readers.","fullyFundedDate":1775753698495,"projectUrl":"project/turning-readers-into-thinkers-with-chapt/10173697/","projectTitle":"Turning Readers Into Thinkers with Chapter Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Curry","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10275633_orig.jpg?crop=775,775,x0,y82&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1774729063125","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10275633"},{"teacherId":10275633,"projectId":10173637,"letterContent":"Thank you for bringing new books and excitement into our classroom through \"Books That Keep My Classroom Buzzing with Readers.\" My students have started reading the books during our small-group reading lessons. They love having an actual book in front of them instead of reading from photocopied pages. Holding the books, turning the pages, and looking closely at the illustrations have made reading more engaging and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThese books have also helped my students transition from first-grade books to longer, more challenging second-grade chapter books. During small groups, they are strengthening their reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension while discussing the characters, events, and important details in each chapter. They are proud of themselves for reading chapter books and are excited to discover what happens next.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, their excitement has continued beyond our classroom lessons. My students now love visiting the school library to find and check out other chapter books.
