As an English teacher, I believe in the Madeleine L'Engle quote, "Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving." With a classroom library, I will be able to offer my students the experience of reading stories that relate to their lives, and help them navigate through their challenges. I always push my students to a higher level of reading and comprehension, not only for the skill, but also for personal development, because I know that stories heal us and help us to shape our identities. I teach Los Angeles inner city children, and many of them come from low-income households, so new supplies for the school are hard to come by. Despite their challenges, my students love to read, write, and learn; and their grit is inspiring.
