Students absolutely loved receiving raffle tickets for making good choices. It motivated students to stay engaged, participate more actively, and support one another.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their faces lit up. It opened the door to rich conversations about character growth, important themes, and the deeper meaning behind events in the story. We used character trait charts to analyze characters and cited text evidence to support our ideas.\r\n\r\nStudents practiced making inferences about the setting and characters, along with key reading skills like summarizing and predicting. Because Holes includes some darker historical elements, I also incorporated a brief history lesson to give students the context they needed to understand those scenes respectfully and thoughtfully.\r\n\r\nWe also used a variety of collaborative discourse structures such as write-round-robin, mix-pair-share, and partner talk.
