Many of our students experience stress and anxiety related to college applications, financial aid, and postsecondary planning. The sensory tools provide a simple but powerful way for students to regulate their emotions, stay focused, and manage stress during these important milestones. Students were excited to choose a motivational squeeze star and often shared their favorite messages with friends.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting additions has been the college mail mailbox. Students eagerly check the mailbox for college acceptance letters, scholarship notifications, and other important college-related correspondence. The mailbox has helped build a culture of excitement around postsecondary planning and has turned the college application process into a shared celebration within our school community.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, their reactions were immediate. My AP Research students still don't have research questions. That's deliberate. Before they can ask something worth a year of their lives, they have to find out what they actually keep thinking about.\r\n\r\nYour binders showed up in May and sat in boxes all summer. We opened them on day one. Every student built one — eight tabs, a dashboard on the front, sheet protectors for the pages that matter — and that binder is now where the year lives. It holds their Lens Farming entries, which are five to seven minutes of nonstop writing at the start of class, one prompt, no editing, nobody reads it but them. Last week's prompt was \"what's something you've wondered about but never looked up because you figured no one would take the question seriously?\" The room went quiet in a way it hadn't yet this year. Those pages, on the loose leaf you bought, are the raw material for everything that follows.\r\n\r\nThis week they took three published research papers, mapped the ideas onto tiles, and taped them to the wall so that every place two tiles touched was a claim they had to defend out loud. Next week they reread every entry in the binder and pull one line out: \"I keep coming back to ___, because ___.\" That line becomes a research question in October and a paper by spring. The foam board is waiting for the posters they'll build in the spring, and the microphones and tripods for the presentations they'll record — they don't know about those yet. One of the sample papers they studied was written by a student who built two model buildings out of acrylic and tested whether a termite-mound-inspired chimney could cool them. Several of my students realized, reading it, that they were allowed to make something rather than just look something up. It was frustrating for everyone since students would have to hear the loud noises of it breaking down while I'm trying to get the class started.\r\n\r\nThe wall organizer has also helped keep my students and myself accountable by placing absent work in those folders.
