This year, 3 classes of freshmen read Suzanne Collins' dystopian novel, The Hunger Games. We began reading in class, but we were also able to read parts of the book at home because students were engaged in the story and found the text accessible! Student books were full of sticky note annotations noting dystopian elements like totalitarian restrictions, fear of the outside world, dehumanization, and surveillance. They explored themes of political resistance when the districts unified under a hand signal and saw humanity in each other even when their government pitted them against one another. In their Socratic Seminar, they made connections between the Capitol's obsession with watching the games and our society's fascination with reality television. \r\n\r\nThroughout the unit, students worked on developing arguments and finding textual evidence to support their claims. Thanks to your support, our English Department, which serves about 1,400 students in grades 6–12, received care packages filled with thoughtful and essential teaching tools.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes arrived, it felt like a celebration. Each of our twelve teachers will open their package in a few days to find an assortment of items perfectly chosen for the real, everyday work of teaching: cheerful grading stamps, reliable pens, dry-erase markers, batteries, and classroom staples like glue sticks, tape, and magnetic clips. These weren't just supplies; they were reminders that the hard work of preparation, creativity, and organization is seen and supported. Several teachers immediately began using their new materials to refresh bulletin boards, organize student writing portfolios, and bring color and clarity to lessons.\r\n\r\nThe art supplies and construction paper will inspire small creative projects, and the Magnetic Apple Timers are sure to be a favorite tool for pacing reading discussions and writing workshops. The classrooms run more smoothly, transitions are calmer, and teachers can focus more on engaging instruction rather than scrambling for missing supplies. The care packages will bring new energy into the department, reminding every teacher that they are valued and that their work matters to the wider community.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in educators and for helping make our shared learning spaces brighter, cleaner, and more joyful.
