Students, whether they recognize it or not, are reading 3-4 books at a time with their individual choices, our class read aloud, and novel studies. We are time travelers, adventurers, friends, but most of all, we are becoming thoughtful readers.\r\n\r\nThe two titles in this project, \"Remember Us\" and \"The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson\" are fantastic to show students what writing looks like and how a story set in Brooklyn, written in different centuries, with strong main characters can be so similar and yet approached differently.\r\n\r\nIn my class the students start any book by judging the cover (yes!). I encourage them to pour over the cover imagery, blurbs, fine print, and get a feel for the book. Once they've formed those first impressions than we can start affirming or challenging perspectives. Early in our reading I put students in small groups and provide them questions that they randomly chose from a cup to answer--who are the main characters, where are we, when are we, etc. These questions help build their identities as readers--I'm not assessing their knowledge of the story, I'm assessing if they can identify the needed basics and interpret, feel, and interact with the characters and author's voice.\r\n\r\nThese two books feature strong perspectives, engaging prose, and a story that students quickly connect to. They've followed along intently, made inferences for characters, and began figuring out how they've changed because of these books. I wouldn't have been able to do this without you, and I appreciate it deeply.","fullyFundedDate":1714429674511,"projectUrl":"project/more-diverse-books/8320947/","projectTitle":"More Diverse Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rupiper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9374522_orig.png?crop=1106,1106,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1713499301451","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9374522"},{"teacherId":7109607,"projectId":8455754,"letterContent":"Thank you so so much for helping us acquire such culturally rich novels. Our class has thoroughly enjoyed reading about Esperanza's story, incentivizing quite a few to read more and on their own. Sometimes, all it takes is one good book, for a child to learn the love of reading. This text has also allowed us to explore many different perspectives, as well as current and past and societal issues.\r\n\r\nIn watching my students dive into \"Esperanza Rising\", it really felt like I was seeing them undergo their own \"rising\"... as they followed Esperanza from her life of luxury in Mexico to the dusty labor camps of California. Our class wasn't just reading a story; we were practicing deep empathy. And in navigating the challenges of the Great Depression and the injustices of the migrant experience through her eyes, we were also able to develop a much deeper sense of social awareness that connects the classroom to the real world.\r\n\r\nTo us, Esperanza's story was both a \"mirror\" to our own, personal struggles, as well as a \"window\" into another life, and through it, we've discovered that books aren't just paper and inkābut tools for resilience and windows to the heart.
