Students, whether they recognize it or not, are reading 3-4 books at a time with their individual choices, our class read aloud, and novel studies. We are time travelers, adventurers, friends, but most of all, we are becoming thoughtful readers.\r\n\r\nThe two titles in this project, \"Remember Us\" and \"The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson\" are fantastic to show students what writing looks like and how a story set in Brooklyn, written in different centuries, with strong main characters can be so similar and yet approached differently.\r\n\r\nIn my class the students start any book by judging the cover (yes!). I encourage them to pour over the cover imagery, blurbs, fine print, and get a feel for the book. Once they've formed those first impressions than we can start affirming or challenging perspectives. Early in our reading I put students in small groups and provide them questions that they randomly chose from a cup to answer--who are the main characters, where are we, when are we, etc. These questions help build their identities as readers--I'm not assessing their knowledge of the story, I'm assessing if they can identify the needed basics and interpret, feel, and interact with the characters and author's voice.\r\n\r\nThese two books feature strong perspectives, engaging prose, and a story that students quickly connect to. They've followed along intently, made inferences for characters, and began figuring out how they've changed because of these books. Our students had a fun time during the unboxing as they attempted to guess the name of each instrument. We allowed out little ones to hear the sounds but not see the instruments during the unboxing. They said the rattle on a string sounded like Legos, they thought the cabasa sounded like maracas, and they were stumped when it came to the rainsticks. They've been having a special time learning and interacting with the instruments They are also making connections between their new wooden instruments and our current unit on tress. It's been a joy watching them explore and learn. It certainly did not appeal to anyone's interest; not to mention, not all students can read chapter books in Spanish, without struggling. \r\n\r\nThe books you helped us attain are not only new and in great condition, but the graphics are very appealing. Not to mention, it allows students to interact with the Spanish language in through informational texts- so they are not just limited to narrative readings. The level of the content varies from book to book, which is also nice to have for some of our advanced and beginning readers.
