Instead of only talking about chemistry concepts or watching demonstrations, students are now able to actually do the work themselves. One of our first activities with the new supplies had students building molecules, using lab glassware, and working together to investigate chemical reactions and molecular structure. It was exciting to watch students make connections in real time and become more confident explaining what they were learning.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, students were genuinely excited. Many of them immediately wanted to open everything, explore the equipment, and start using it. For some students, this was the first time they had access to the kind of lab materials they associate with \"real\" science classrooms. That excitement carried into our lessons, where students became more engaged, asked more questions, and took greater ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nThese resources are continuing to help us as we move into more challenging AP Chemistry topics like intermolecular forces, thermochemistry, and reaction rates. Having hands-on materials has made difficult concepts feel more approachable and has helped students feel more prepared for labs, exams, and future STEM opportunities. Even with the change, these resources have had a huge impact on student learning and engagement in both biology and marine science.\r\n\r\nStudents were especially excited to use the models during labs and class activities because they could physically interact with concepts that are usually difficult to visualize. The molecule kits helped students better understand bonding, polarity, and how molecular structure affects the properties of water, while the plate tectonics model gave students a much clearer understanding of seafloor spreading, subduction zones, and how Earth's processes shape the ocean floor. Many students who normally struggle with abstract concepts were more willing to participate, ask questions, and explain their thinking when they could work with hands-on materials.\r\n\r\nThe addition of new lab safety equipment has also helped create a safer and more professional lab environment for students as we continue increasing the number of inquiry-based activities in our classroom.
