With access to paper, colored pencils, color sticks, and even regular pencils, students are able to fully engage in lessons without worrying about whether they have the materials they need. One project that truly shows the impact of these resources was a recent food art drawing assignment, where students used the grid method to create a photorealistic drawing of their favorite food. Having quality materials allowed them to focus on observation, detail, and craftsmanship, and the pride they took in their work was incredible to see.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited and grateful. For many of them, simply having a complete set of art supplies felt special and motivating. They immediately treated the materials with care and were eager to start creating. As a first-year teacher, it was incredibly meaningful to see how access to these supplies made students feel supported, valued, and confident in their abilities.\r\n\r\nCurrently, my students are learning about space as an element of art, exploring how artists create depth and the illusion of distance. Their next major project will be designing and drawing a city using two-point perspective, where they will apply these concepts in a more complex and challenging way. Thanks to our donors, my students can fully participate in this learning experience and continue growing creatively. These supplies are making a real difference in both their art education and their development as creative thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1765253027538,"projectUrl":"project/intro-to-drawing-class-supplies/9472948/","projectTitle":"Intro to Drawing Class Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Calderon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10082524"},{"teacherId":10247527,"projectId":9695871,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our students have had the opportunity to read Maus, a powerful and thought-provoking text that has deeply impacted our classroom learning. Through this book, students developed important skills such as analyzing symbolism, understanding how visual elements contribute to meaning, and examining how authors convey complex historical events through narrative. Additionally, students were able to thematically analyze the graphic novel alongside Night, by Elie Wiesel. Some themes that were tracked and closely examined were trauma, survival, faith, and dehumanization.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive and reflective. Students took turns reading Maus aloud and loved every minute of it. There were a few students in particular that loved reading for everyone and made voices for each character in the story. Through guided discussions, students had meaningful and profound conversations about identity, humanity, and suffering. All of these conversations helped students build an open-minded empathy that reflected on mistakes from the past.\r\n\r\nI was shocked by the number of students that eagerly participated in the reading and discussions, especially those that are typically hesitant to share. It was the first time I even heard some of my students read aloud! We are incredibly grateful to you for making this impactful learning experience possible.","fullyFundedDate":1757883960818,"projectUrl":"project/empathy-in-every-panel-teaching-through/9695871/","projectTitle":"Empathy in Every Panel: Teaching Through Maus","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10247527_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757305256382","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10247527"},{"teacherId":1307635,"projectId":9785505,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding supplies for our Harlem Renaissance Artist Gallery — your generosity made it possible for my 11th grade U.S. History students to create vibrant posters and complete in-depth research projects. The cubbies have helped in maintaining test equipment organized and easily accessible during evaluations. The fake plants allow for my office to feel like a cozy environment and bring light to the space. It has featured a series of lessons and activities on graphic novel elements, visual literacy, and the hero's journey. \r\n\r\nAfter each section, students completed a panel analysis which required students to analyze elements such as color, perspective, lines, texture, and shape and explain it's impact of our understanding of the story. To end our unit, students read about the hero's journey. I was SO proud to see how much of the story they retained as it is a complex plot full of difficult-to-pronounce names. \r\n\r\nMy favorite moment of this unit was when one particular student couldn't wait until the next day to finish the book and read ahead on his own. As an educator, I understand completely what it is like to not be \"seen\" in literature. My culture is seldom discussed in any American novel or text, and I cannot recall a time, as a student, where we were reading a text that had a Middle Eastern character.\r\n\r\nMy parents immigrated to America in the late 1970s from Iran. They are Armenian diaspora seeking political asylum from a Muslim-Regime. Had it not been for their haste, bravery, and courage to immigrate- I would not be who I am today. \r\n\r\nMy students resonate with my personal story here at Cleveland Charter High School. Most of my students come from diverse, multi-cultural, immigrant households. They understand what it is like to be \"invisible\" in the text. Persepolis, however, speaks to all who understand such circumstance as parents wanting a better future for their children, families grappling with war or political regimes within their home country, and now with the current ICE raids among us, Persepolis sheds light and shares situations close to home but from across the globe. \r\n\r\nThe generational push and pull of migration and motherland are seen in Marjane Satrap's novel.
