These graphic novels and high‑interest books support important literacy skills like comprehension, inferencing, sequencing events, and understanding characters and themes, while the visuals make texts more accessible for all readers. Students are learning that reading comes in many forms and that it can be fun, engaging, and meaningful, not just an academic task. Series like CatStronauts, Bunnicula, FGTeeV, and Tegan and Sara: Junior High motivate students to stick with books longer, build stamina, and gain confidence as readers.\r\nReading time in our classroom is now filled with excitement and choice. Students eagerly browse the classroom library, recommend books to classmates, and take pride in finishing stories they connect with. Some of my most reluctant readers are especially thriving—they light up when they find books that reflect their interests in humor, adventure, friendship, or mystery. These books have helped foster a positive reading culture where every student feels included and capable. Because of this project, my students are developing stronger literacy skills and, most importantly, a growing love for reading that I know will last beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1773460103665,"projectUrl":"project/fun-reads-to-spark-a-love-of-reading/9839733/","projectTitle":"Fun Reads to Spark a Love of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Suastegui","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9072311_orig.jpg?crop=1114,1114,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1715131967537","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9072311"},{"teacherId":9072311,"projectId":9895160,"letterContent":"When the plant kits, terrariums, and mini greenhouse arrived, my students were beyond excited. They crowded around the table, pointing out the tiny bulbs, glass vases, and tools they would soon get to use. We started our project that same week by planting seeds and making predictions in our science journals. Watching them carefully measure soil, gently press seeds into place, and label their containers showed me just how invested they already were. The greenhouse setup instantly became the class favorite—students check on it every morning, eager to see the first signs of growth.\r\nOne of my favorite moments was when a student said, \"It's like we have our own science lab!\" The propagation stations sparked so many thoughtful questions about plant reproduction and ecosystems. Students loved seeing roots begin to form in the glass tubes, and many asked if they could grow plants at home too. These hands‑on materials have made our lessons more meaningful because students aren't just reading about life cycles—they're experiencing them in real time.\r\nOur next steps include comparing growth in different environments, documenting changes with photos, and creating a mini \"plant museum\" display using our terrariums and observation tools. Thanks to your support, my students are developing curiosity, responsibility, and a genuine love for science. They loved exploring the different sensory items...especially the Calm Strips and liquid motion timer. We used them right away during our morning meeting, and students took turns trying the breathing lamps as we practiced slow, guided breaths together. It was incredible to see how quickly the room shifted from energetic chatter to quiet focus. Even students who sometimes struggle with self-regulation were engaged, calm, and proud of themselves for using the tools correctly.\r\nThe journals have already become a meaningful part of our day. We've been using them for short reflection prompts, gratitude lists, and emotional check-ins. One moment that really stayed with me was when a student wrote, \"This helps me feel better when my mind is too full.\" The combination of journals, sensory items, and breathing tools has given my students a new sense of control over their emotions. They are learning not just what they feel, but how to handle those feelings in healthy, mindful ways.\r\nThese materials have helped create a calmer, more supportive classroom environment; exactly what I hoped for. My students are beginning to use the tools independently whenever they need a moment to reset, which has made our transitions smoother and our learning time more focused. As we continue practicing mindfulness, I can already see my students carrying these strategies into other parts of their day. Students grabbed their boards and got right to work, solving problems together and showing their thinking with so much confidence. The magnetic baskets have already made a difference in keeping us organized; now students can quickly grab what they need without interrupting the flow of the lesson. It's been wonderful to see how something as simple as fresh markers and erasers can make group work feel smoother and more engaging.\r\nThe journals and gel pens have also brought a new spark to our writing time. My students love having their own space to jot down ideas, reflect on lessons, or dive into creative writing. One moment that stood out to me was when a student who usually hesitates to write quietly opened a journal and started filling a page with ideas for a personal narrative. These tools have given them not just a place to write, but a sense of ownership and pride in what they create.\r\nAs we move into our next units, these materials will continue to support hands-on learning in math, STEM, and writing.
