My classroom at Grape Street Elementary in Watts is a place where every child deserves to feel welcomed, understood, and proud of what they can accomplish. I teach kindergarten through second-grade students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. This is the first year our IDM program is back on campus, and we are building a classroom that reflects our students’ needs, personalities, and potential. Our days are filled with learning that takes many forms: using pictures to make a choice, practicing the letters in a name, counting objects, or learning to take turns with a friend. Many of my students communicate without spoken words, and we work every day to help them express their needs, interests, and ideas. A small step toward independence can be a moment worth celebrating with the whole class. After 13 years in special education, I know how much the right materials and patient, consistent support can matter. My students need hands-on activities, accessible learning tools, and spaces that support their sensory needs so they can participate fully. As we establish this program, my goal is to create a classroom where every student has meaningful opportunities to learn, build friendships, and experience success. Your support helps us give this new beginning a strong foundation.
