I asked for a set of books to read with my class and supplies to make a cardboard arcade for Open House. I had the idea that I wanted to create a culture of empathy in my classroom. I read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and was moved by the true story of a young boy, about the age of my students, becoming an orphan during the Sudanese Civil War. My hope was to raise money and awareness to then donate to the main characters organization of providing safe water to villages in remote areas. I was unaware of the challenges of raising money in my school district, so instead we raised awareness during our Open House at our Classroom Cardboard Arcade. Our Arcade could not have been so successful had it not been for your donations. The Arcade was such a success, that even my Principal praised the great turnout and engagement from each of my students. \r\n\r\nAs a class, we read the book together and discussed issues of family dynamics, responsibility and empathy. We read the book the last month of school so it was a quick read but the discussions were thoughtful and engaging. The students brought up the fact how different other people live, yet, we all want the same thing- love, safety and peace. We did a lot of journal writing because my class comes from many different economic backgrounds. I was touched when they they wanted to continue reading once the chapter for the day was over. I forgot to snap pics of our read alouds, but did manage to get pictures of the students working collaboratively on their cardboard arcade. They loved it! Since receiving these supplies, students have been working collaboratively in groups to create posters and anchor charts that showcase their shared knowledge of language arts topics and demonstrate their comprehension of reading passages. The simple addition of fresh, high-quality materials has increased engagement, encouraged teamwork, and helped students present their thinking in creative and visually meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nWe are especially excited about our next project, which will bring learning to life in a new way. Students will be researching a Roman God or Goddess and creating a colorful, detailed poster that includes an illustrated image along with important facts and information about their chosen figure. Using the donated markers, colored pencils, and chart paper, students will be able to design vibrant, polished projects that reflect both their research and their creativity. The look of surprise on their faces when I brought in Amazon box after box of goodies. I opened the boxes and put them in the \"critter free\" containers I also asked for. They are displayed nicely behind my desk and serve as a reminder to be mindful of respect and perseverance! I use the snacks in two different ways. I have a class banking system, so when students are on task or caught being good, I send them pretend cash to their bank accounts. Every two weeks, kids get to shop in the class store and often the #1 item is food! I tried to pick snacks that were not filled with sugar or salt. My school prides itself on teaching good food choices since each class has its own garden bed and we grow our own vegetables and herbs. Another way I have used the snacks is to treat my students when they have achieved an accomplishment as a class. We got the attendance award a few months back, so I let each student pick a snack from the class store. What an attendance incentive! Thanks!\r\n\r\n I thought the snacks would be gone by December, but we actually have enough left to last us another month or two.
