Prior to your gift, our culinary section was severely outdated, holding books that were over 30 years old with minimal pictures. The impact of these new, enticing additions was immediate. The children's eyes lit up when they saw familiar characters in the Dr. Seuss, Bluey, Minecraft, and Disney Princess cookbooks. Because so many of our students love cooking, looking at the vibrant pictures and delicious recipes has dramatically boosted their motivation to read.\r\n\r\nBeyond teaching essential literacy skills, these books are providing our students with invaluable real-world life skills. We have already seen how these recipes empower students to learn the basics of preparing a meal, which has beautifully extended into their homes. These cookbooks are creating meaningful opportunities for our students to connect with their parents, allowing them to spend high-quality time together while bringing a recipe to life in the kitchen.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, your donation has allowed us to champion cultural representation. With a portion of our student body coming from Asian backgrounds, titles like A Very Asian Guide to Filipino Food and A Very Asian Guide to Vietnamese Food provide vital moments for students to see their own heritage celebrated. Paired with inclusive picture books like Plátanos Go with Everything, Soul Food Sunday, and Ramen for Everyone, our collection now teaches empathy and global awareness through the universal language of food. You have helped us build a library where every child feels seen, valued, and equipped with skills for the future.","fullyFundedDate":1776071879090,"projectUrl":"project/read-it-eat-it-diversifying-our-librar/10161949/","projectTitle":"Read It, Eat It! Your generosity has helped create new opportunities for learning that are more exciting, engaging, and flexible for our students each day.\r\n\r\nWith the iPad, students now have access to interactive lessons in different parts of the classroom as well as outdoors. We are able to bring learning to life through music, videos, Google Slides, and other digital resources that keep students actively involved and excited to participate. The flexibility of the iPad allows us to move beyond traditional instruction and create meaningful learning experiences wherever learning takes us.\r\n\r\nSince implementing the iPad in our classroom, I have especially noticed increased engagement from students with special needs and English learners. The visual and interactive features help make lessons more accessible, support understanding, and encourage participation from all students. It has been wonderful to see students feel more confident, connected, and excited about learning.\r\n\r\nYour kindness and support are making a real difference in our classroom, and we are incredibly grateful for your investment in our students' education and success. These new titles have already made such a positive impact. The books feature familiar and beloved characters that students recognize, which immediately draws them in and sparks their excitement to read. The text is presented in a way that allows young readers to progress at their own pace, helping them learn without feeling overwhelmed. This thoughtful structure has been key in building both their reading skills and their confidence.\r\n\r\nIt has been incredible to watch students eagerly dive into these books and proudly share that they are \"reading on their own.\" Many have started exploring new series and genres that they had not tried before. One exciting example is the Narwhal and Jelly series—students have enjoyed it so much that they are already asking for more books in the collection. Your generous contribution has not only added wonderful new stories to our library shelves but has also inspired our youngest readers to see themselves as capable, lifelong readers.","fullyFundedDate":1746785981053,"projectUrl":"project/exciting-new-books-for-emergent-readers/9172007/","projectTitle":"Exciting New Books for Emergent Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9549315"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6996","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":362,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":80,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":73,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":87.0,"schoolId":6996,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gledhill Street Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gledhill Street Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/gledhill-street-elementary-school/6996"}
