When the boxed arrived, my students' curiosity was peaked. \"What could be in such heavy boxes?\" was the question that we asked, which ties in with our thematic unit of scientific inquiry and learning how to ask questions. \r\nMy students helped me open the boxes and saw the filament, but did not undertand what it was until we started to load it into the printer and began printing. My high reading group went first and researched things they wanted to make. They researched it, downloaded it, sliced it (with help), and began the printing process (again, with help).\r\nThe anticipation was part of the process and the students wanted to finish their work quickly and check on the printer each hour! With the first two printings done, we took pictures and I made individual writing pages for them to use to create sentences and short (one paragraph) stories about. It all began when we received a medium sized surprise box that the students got to open. I was able to build the printer in just about an hour which was really quick and prepare it for use. \r\nThe following morening i was as excited as they were to begin printing, so we started with the enclosed test print, and it worked flawlessly. The students were amazed to see the filament go into the machine and come out in a new form. \r\nWe followed this by researching online things that they wanted to make and ran them through a slicer (standard for 3d printing) with students doing ALL the steps! Students transferred the files and then began the process making their prints. When we opened the boxes that arrived, students first saw that there was paint in clear tubes. Basic colors as well as fancy silver and gold. I had some foam printing mats in the classroom so we all watched a video on (basic) lineotype or foam printing and then for our classroom science and art project we all used pencils to create our thank-you cards. The children really seemed to enjoy the kinishtetic feel of writing on a new material, as well as a chance to express themselves through creation. The best part for them turned out to be the wet sticky sounds the brayers made as they inked their papers.
