The students are so engaged with the learning; it is incredible! We are learning so much about what the students can already do and where they need to go. \r\n The materials you donated are very open-ended, so students have been using them in unique ways. The open nature of the materials allows the teachers to find extensions that drive the learning foward. For instance, one of the \"countables\" was a collection of colorful plastic bugs. In one of the first grade rooms, a pair of students organized their count by color and wrote and equation to solve for how many. I looked like this:\r\n5 + 4 + 5 + 3+ 5= 22, with each number in the equation written in a different color to reflect the color of the bug. Students were able to tell us that they grouped the 5s first and then added 4 and 3. From this basic equation, students were given extension questions. \"What would happen if 12 of your bugs walked away?\" The students went to the back of their paper and showed 22 bugs. They then put an X over 12 of them and were able to count 10 bugs that were left. No algorithm needed.\r\n The opportunity to count items and talk about them will be key for our students to develop a truly firm idea of number sense. The more they engage in counting and work around it, the better future mathematicians we will have. THANK YOU for making this happen!","fullyFundedDate":1757875137410,"projectUrl":"project/can-we-count-get-it-on-you-to-help-us/9402961/","projectTitle":"Can We COUNT (get it?)
