My students are classified as ISE (Intensive Structured English). This means they speak very little to no English, and rely on their teacher for primary language support. Most students have Spanish speaking parents. It is very hard for the parents to help the students because the curriculum is so intense and rigorous. As teachers in the inner-city the odds are already against us. We recently lost our computer lab teacher, our physical education teacher and our reading recovery specialists. However, we are more determined than ever to raise these students' academics up to the level of more affluent communities and neighborhoods. The pressure is on, but we are ready to face it. They have recently raised our class sizes, cut our school year and cut our pay. But we are still here, fighting for our students. They deserve a chance. The items we are requesting are for the class, and may be borrowed to take home (scissors or glue) if the families cannot afford it.
