Some carefully read every book jacket before making their decision, while others excitedly hugged their books to their chests, already planning when they would start reading. Their joy and pride were a beautiful reminder that something as simple as owning a book can make a child feel seen, valued, and inspired.\r\n\r\nThe Lit Festival was about much more than giving away books. It gave students the opportunity to explore different genres, discover new authors, ask questions, make recommendations to one another, and develop the confidence to choose books that truly interested them. These moments build lifelong reading habits by strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and reading stamina. In our classroom, reading is centered on choice, curiosity, and meaningful conversations. We celebrate books that serve as both windows into new experiences and mirrors reflecting our students' own lives, helping every child see themselves as a reader.\r\n\r\nOne of the most touching moments was watching students who had never owned many books light up with excitement as they realized they were helping build a library they could take home. Several students shared that this would be one of only a handful of books they owned, while others immediately began talking about reading with siblings or sharing their new books with family members. Thanks to your kindness, our scholars didn't just receive books; they received the opportunity to continue their reading journey beyond the classroom, to create memories around stories at home, and to develop a lifelong love of reading. Many of these materials were used while I was on maternity leave, ensuring that my students still had meaningful, hands-on art experiences even when I was away. Knowing that my classroom was supported during that time meant more than I can express.\r\n\r\nWhen students returned and saw fresh supplies ready for them, there was an immediate sense of excitement and possibility. There's something powerful about a student picking up a brand-new paper or dipping a brush into vibrant paint for the first time. One of our recent projects focused on oil pastel techniques and celebrating their names, in the style of Jasper John's artwork. Because we had the materials we needed, students were able to experiment, layer, revise, and truly take creative risks. I watched students who are usually hesitant become more confident simply because they had the tools to fully bring their ideas to life. \r\n\r\nYour support doesn't just provide supplies - it provides access, equity, and opportunity. Next, my students will be creating identity collages and illustrating narratives written by other students at our school.
