The students I serve are primarily Latinos, African American and Cambodian. 92% of the student body are on free or reduced lunch. The majority of the parents of the students I serve are not college educated and work multiple jobs. Although I know the parents I serve would like to be able to support their child more academically, they just don’t have the academic background from which to do so. It is for this reason, that I need to be engaging and effective in teaching them the Algebra CC Standards during the 50 min. that they are with me in order to help them be High School ready and College bound. Our Principal has brought in new staff members as well as new programs such as Project Lead The Way, Robotics and STEM so that our students are prepared for the 21st century demands. I, being one of the newer members of the staff, want to create an engaging Algebra class. I want to take away the notion that Math is not for all but on the contrary, it is a part of all of our daily lives.
