As a life-long learner that constantly aims to empower each and all of my students, I am constantly looking for effective strategies that will help them develop stronger numerical reasoning skills. In such a journey, books are some of the best tools to gain that extra insight and provide my students with rich mathematical experiences that will help them acquire powerful numerical strategies.\r\n In the particular case of this project, these books gave me the opportunity to incorporate number talks as part of the just-in-time interventions we use to teach concepts in high school geometry. As you can see in one of the pictures, students were posed with a very typical numerical expression that results when one works with right triangles. Particularly, this and comparable expressions were used when working with questions involving right-triangle trigonometry and the Pythagorean theorem. Students not only practiced their numerical reasoning, but improved on it, by sharing and listening to the different approaches students used to evaluate such an expression.\r\n Additionally, these books were used to learn new concepts that were incorporated as part of the lesson design process. In one case, I introduced the concept of the open number line to do computations mentally in the context of the Triangle Angle Sum Theorem. In this case, I am honored to let you know that as a results of the books your foundation funded, I included brief connections to the history of mathematics in my math lessons. I also had my students compare and contrast symbols that represent big ideas in mathematics. I have included one such example in the photos. In this case, my students were asked to compare the symbols for congruence and for similarity as an invitation to learn and to engage in deeper analysis and discussion. As a result of the books that you graciously provided, I also started implementing the practice of journaling. My students were able to think more deeply as a result of such practice. Your donation provided my students with building bricks (similar to legos) and an invaluable fun and engaging learning experience! My students used these building blocks to discover important geometric relationships. One of the first relationships my students discovered by playing with the building bricks was the Triangle Inequality. Then, my students confirmed the Pythagorean Theorem. They also discovered the Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem. As we move towards the end of the academic year, my students will be using these bricks to construct different irregular shapes and then find the perimeter, area, and volume of such designs.
