Students have the materials they need to bring patterns to life, making stuffed dinosaurs, water bottle holders, beanies, book bags, purses, micro granny square earrings, and so much more. Your donation allowed one student, who learned to crochet in September 2024, to make her first crochet frog, which sparked a fire in her to create. She has since become a prolific crocheter, mastering stitches and custom-making items for those around her–often without patterns. Seeing the zeal and fire in that student's eyes–and seeing it transform her into a highly motivated learner–was a deeply moving experience.\r\n\r\nCrocheting and knitting are valuable skills for high school students, not simply because they can create cool things with their own two hands, but because they have tangible proof that they can do hard things and accomplish something impressive. One of the highlights from this year was getting to take Crochet & Knit Club to the Women's Resilience Center at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) on February 5th. Students got to spend an hour and a half with refugees from around the world, teaching, learning and crafting together! It was beautiful to watch students form connections with women and children in spite of language barriers. The bus ride back to campus was abuzz with excitement; students couldn't wait to share about their experience and plan a second visit.\r\n\r\nOur next step as a club is to create a club tapestry out of granny squares! This week, students began making granny squares using the yarn, hooks, and needles purchased by your donation. Each student will create at least one granny square to contribute to the tapestry, which will be sewn together and displayed on our \"Wall of Pride,\" where photos of items made by students are posted. Reflecting on the past few months, I am amazed how a love of fiber art has brought students together. Students who are reluctant learners in class, or who feel they don't fit in, or who struggle with motivation to even come to school each day come alive when they hold a hook and yarn in their hands and turn in into something unique. I'm so grateful for the ways Crochet & Knit Club has thrived this year, and it's all thanks to you. You've made a lasting impact on our campus & community, and I can't wait to see where the future takes us!","fullyFundedDate":1727186392312,"projectUrl":"project/one-stitch-at-a-time-self-efficacy-thro/8813479/","projectTitle":"One Stitch at a Time: Self-Efficacy Through Crochet!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. V.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5251674_orig.jpg?crop=1663,1663,x937,y262&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727043006949","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5251674"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110243","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":138,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.0,"schoolId":110243,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Idea Center High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Idea Center High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/grossmont-union-high-school-district/idea-center-high-school/110243"}
