The arrival of the new items—the cozy floor cushions, the new books, the colorful bulletin board paper, the birthday charts, and those new pencils—has seriously energized our whole learning environment. Your contributions have immediately helped make our classroom feel more comfortable, organized, and inspiring for every student. The quality of these new supplies has already given the kids a greater sense of pride and ownership in our shared space.\r\n\r\nThese materials are already having a major positive impact on our daily lessons and general work habits. The charts and new books are constantly in use, helping students with everything from reference checking to finding great ideas for their creative writing. The comfort provided by the cushions encourages them to stay focused and engaged for longer periods, and the new bulletin board paper helps us keep our learning displays fresh and accessible. All of these simple items add up to a much improved educational experience every single day.\r\n\r\nWe appreciate your generosity immensely. Your contribution has made a remarkable difference in our students' learning experiences. Thanks to your generosity, our students now have access to engaging texts that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity.\r\n\r\nThrough these books, students are developing important skills such as close reading, inferencing, comparing and contrasting perspectives, and expressing their ideas in both writing and discussion. They are learning to analyze characters, themes, and plots, and to make connections to their own lives—lessons that extend far beyond the pages of a book. Reading in our classroom has become more interactive and lively. Students eagerly gather for group discussions and activities, and share personal reflections on the stories they are reading.\r\n\r\nThe excitement of exploring new worlds and ideas is evident in the way students discuss and debate, ask questions, and even recommend books to one another. Your support has truly enriched our classroom, allowing students to explore literature in meaningful ways while fostering a lifelong love of reading. We learn about fun new words and how to analyze character behavior and its impact on the story. When we learn about new vocabulary, we break the word down, looking for root words, prefixes, and suffixes. We look at what part of speech the word is and how it is used in the context of the story. We will define the word using both words and pictures as that has been shown to improve recognition. When we look at comprehension questions, we not only answer the question but also talk about how to answer the question. This is a skill the students can use while reading the story today but also when applying for a job in the future. \r\nAnother way we learn about stories is by having the students talk to each other about events in the story and how they can relate to them on a personal level. In the case of Fish in a Tree, my students will able to relate to many of the characters in the book as I serve a large neurodivergent population. This book was especially important to me as the main character and I share the same disability, dyslexia. Some of the characters are first generation language learners like my students. I appreciate the representation this book offers my students. Seeing themselves in the stories in our classroom is vital to them feeling like they are part of our community.","fullyFundedDate":1744219253526,"projectUrl":"project/novel-tree/9233703/","projectTitle":"Novel Tree","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Boyd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lauren-boyd"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4790","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":560,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":67,"percentAsian":67,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"26.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.6,"schoolId":4790,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Windmill Springs Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Windmill Springs Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/franklin-mckinley-school-district/windmill-springs-elementary-school/4790"}
