Students have practiced steady beat, rhythm patterns, tempo, and coordination while drumming. Because the activity is active and hands-on, it has helped students to be engaged while also developing their musical skills through movement and repetition.\r\n\r\nPool noodle drumming has also helped students through collaboration, creativity, and confidence. Students have been able to work in small groups to create rhythmic patterns, perform ostinatos, or respond to rhythms played by the teacher or classmates. The playful nature of using pool noodles as an activity has helped to reduce anxiety about making mistakes, and it has encouraged students who have been hesitant to participate in more traditional music activities. It also provided lots of opportunities for students to listen to one another, maintain a shared beat, and contribute their own ideas to a group performance. Each child has been tested and placed in their own reading library with books at their own level, just right for them. On Fridays, we enjoy the built-in incentive program. The students receive stars for all of the books that they have read and they get to go in and spend them to build a robot and add accessories. I love this wonderful donation to our classroom. Because of you, they now see themselves reflected in stories that honor their cultures, their families, and their lived experiences. These culturally responsive and SEL-focused books are helping us build more than reading skills, they are helping us build empathy, confidence, and a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like students pausing to say, \"That's like my family,\" or \"I've felt that way before.\" It looks like thoughtful discussions about characters navigating challenges, making hard choices, and finding their voices. Academically, we are strengthening skills like analyzing character development, identifying theme, and supporting our thinking with text evidence. But just as importantly, we are learning how to name emotions, practice perspective-taking, and talk openly about kindness, identity, and perseverance.\r\n\r\nSome of my students who once hesitated to pick up a book are now the first to grab one from our shelves.
