They seem to have a love–hate relationship with my teaching manipulatives, so I'll admit I was a bit nervous when I introduced the tools you so graciously provided.\r\n\r\nI started with my higher group, using the cards with Elkonin boxes and markers for each sound, and they absolutely loved them. Then I introduced the \"telephones\" to the other groups. It took a little time for them to get the hang of it, but once they did, they wanted to use them for everything. The flip charts had a similar response; they needed a bit of practice at first, but quickly became a favorite.\r\n\r\nThese manipulatives have made a huge difference in this class's ability to sound out words, blend, substitute sounds, and ultimately become confident beginning readers. I am amazed at how much they have grown and blossomed.\r\n\r\nOverall, it's been really encouraging to see their excitement and engagement grow as they become more comfortable with each tool.
