And I was able to assemble these chairs and let the student use them during the third week of school. I cannot forget the faces of my students when they saw those beautiful, ergonomic chairs that were available for them to use during our classroom consultations. Before, when student come to me for help or consultation, I normally talk to them standing up or sitting in laboratory stools behind their lab worktables. With these new chairs, I can talk to them comfortably near my computer so that I am able to look at my screen when helping my students when they have questions. \r\n\r\nIn the almost 30 years that I have been teaching, I always seem to have taken for granted the fact that students and teachers need to be comfortable when talking with each other during consultation times. Maybe because I was younger then, I did not notice that standing or sitting in hard, uncomfortable stools does not really provide a lot of comfort to me and more importantly, my students. Now that I am older, I have begun to realize that it is hard to stand up for a longer period of time and that these laboratory stools are not really perfect during consultations. Oftentimes, I would end up having leg pains or even back pains from these. And this is the reason I went to DonorsChoose to request for comfortable and ergonomic chairs that me and my students can use in our day-to-day consultations. And just during these few days of using them, I felt the huge difference these ergonomic chairs have over the older ones. And even my students would comfortably sit on them, or sometimes tilting back a little, when I help them with problems in class. They acted like little kids having a new toy to play with, but I cautioned them to be careful since I really want these chairs to last a long time.\r\n\r\nThis is a seemingly small change that I made which, this early, seems to be reaping a lot of benefits already. Not only in the highly positive reactions that students had when they saw the assembled chairs, but our consultations seem to have a more positive effect both on me and my students. Although it would be next to impossible to have more comfortable table and chair sets in my classroom, as the size of the classroom would limit this, I plan on looking into other possible changes that I can do that can benefit my students. I realized that even the simplest or littlest of things, like these chairs, have a significant impact in my classroom.
