In our school, there are 4 chemistry teachers that share equipment for our experiments, equipment like laboratory balances, hot plates and magnetic stirrers. We also share laboratory equipment for classroom demonstrations, like our titration setup which include burets and ring stands. As teachers, we find it very tedious and time consuming to have to setup these equipment and disassemble them when we are done and need to pass the setup to another teacher. I found a mobile laboratory table with a storage cabinet online, and I thought that it would be a perfect tool for us as we can store the equipment inside the cabinet and do the setup and disassembly only one time, as the mobile lab table can be moved from one classroom to another. \r\n\r\nHaving this mobile lab table has been a game changer for us chemistry teachers as it has made laboratory demonstrations easier and more portable. This year, when we do common laboratory demonstrations, we can bring this mobile lab table from one classroom to another. One teacher will setup the equipment and then leave setup for the other teachers to use. Then once we are all done, the last teacher who used the materials will disassemble everything and store them in the cabinets. This is a truly valuable tool for all of us, tremendously making our lessons a lot easier to implement. \r\n\r\nYour support of my project assures the continued use of this mobile table for years to come. The mobile lab table is sturdy and has a chemical resistant top, which would make it a long lasting equipment that a lot of other teachers will be able to utilize. In 10th-grade Chemistry, we often struggle because students can't see the individual atoms and compounds we study; we usually have to rely on 2D cartoons. These kits changed everything by making the invisible visible.\r\n\r\nMy students were able to physically snap together blocks to represent real materials, like Fe2O3 (rust). They watched the reaction come to life as they combined Iron (Fe) and Oxygen (O2). The \"aha!\" moments happened when they realized one atom of iron or one molecule of oxygen wasn't enough to make the math work. They had to add more atoms/ molecules until both sides of the equation were perfectly balanced.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, I was able to secure two kits, allowing my students to work in pairs. This meant every single student had the opportunity to get their hands on the materials. In total, 157 students across five periods used these kits—and some even skipped their break to stop by my last period because they heard how much fun we were having!\r\n\r\nHowever, the gift will keep giving. Next year, there will be another 160 students. In addition, I learned more about how I can use it in multiple ways during the chemical reaction unit.","fullyFundedDate":1770631645468,"projectUrl":"project/balancing-chemical-reactions/10035301/","projectTitle":"Balancing Chemical Reactions","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Suzette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10409813"},{"teacherId":9824832,"projectId":10009795,"letterContent":"You have my most heartfelt and sincere appreciation for helping our class get physical copies of Born a Crime. Our \"Born a Crime\" unit tends to be a student favorite, but having a physical book made their enjoyment so much more tangible, and it really deepened their experience as they showed appreciation for the cultural diversity of our class.\r\nYour generosity has made a real difference for both my students and for me personally. I share this all the time with the parents during our back to school night, because it is hard to understand the properties of elements and compounds unless we dive into the molecular level and have a model of what these tiny atoms and molecules look like. Before, chemistry teachers rely on pictures to see these really small particles. However, with the creation of 3D printers, students can now literally pluck out these particles from a 2-dimensional space on paper into a 3-dimensional space that is printed from a 3D printer. \r\n\r\nThe 2-dimensional models of atoms and molecules look totally different from their 3-dimensional model, and the differences oftentimes explain properties and behaviors of these particles. the molecule of water alone would look like a linear molecule in 2-dinensions, but 3-dimensions, the repulsion of the electrons and bonds in the central oxygen atom of water provides for a bent structure that explains properties of water, including the fact that solid water floats in liquid water even if solids tend to be denser than liquids. \r\n\r\nI consider having a 3D printer a game changing tool for our students, not only helping to visualize and understand behaviors of substances, but maybe attempt to design possible molecular structures for other substances as well. Having a physical model of these invisible particles would really help make the subject chemistry closer to reality for the students.
