As a teacher, there is something incredibly special about putting a book into a student's hands and watching them discover a story, a character, or an idea that makes them feel seen. These books will give my students much more than something new to read. They will give us opportunities to have honest conversations about mental health, belonging, identity, racial inequity, and the importance of finding a community where we feel accepted.\r\nWith The Perks of Being a Wallflower, my students will explore what it means to feel like an outsider and why finding people who understand and support us can make such a difference. We will read together, look closely at passages and learn to read between the lines, listen to the audiobook, and eventually watch the film. In the spring, students will create their own blog or diary entries, adding to their stories each day. I am especially hopeful that students who have struggled with feeling different or alone will see pieces of themselves in this book and recognize that difficult experiences do not have to define their future. \r\nWith Between the World and Me, students will explore racial inequity and have meaningful discussions about how these issues can affect people in our own community and even their classmates. They will ultimately create a documentary about a social issue that impacts our community, giving them a chance to use their voices to bring attention to something they care about.\r\nThank you for believing in my students and in the power of books to open hearts and minds. Your generosity has given me the opportunity to bring stories into my classroom that can help students feel less alone, understand experiences different from their own, and find the courage to speak up for others whose voices may not always be heard. I truly would not have been able to provide these experiences without your support. \r\nThank you for investing in my students, my classroom, and their future. I hope you know that your kindness will reach far beyond these books and will stay with my students in ways we may never fully see.\r\nA special thanks to the SONIC Foundation for their support!","fullyFundedDate":1778036398167,"projectUrl":"project/providing-literature-students-can-relate/10169391/","projectTitle":"Providing Literature Students Can Relate To!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9130902_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y19&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739126106320","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9130902"},{"teacherId":9799845,"projectId":10083021,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom and helping make this project a reality. The resources you provided have completely transformed the atmosphere of our classroom. From the moment the students saw the new materials, they were excited and eager to try them out. Many students immediately commented on how much more comfortable, welcoming, and cozy the classroom felt. It was wonderful to see them take ownership of the space and appreciate the environment that your generosity helped create.\r\n\r\nThese resources were originally requested to better support students with ADHD and other attention and sensory needs, but they have positively impacted every student in the classroom. Students now have access to flexible seating options that help them stay focused. The fidget tools and bands provide students with healthy ways to channel energy while remaining engaged in learning. The light covers have also helped create a calmer atmosphere, reducing distractions and making the classroom feel more inviting and less stressful.\r\n\r\nMore importantly, they have helped create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn. They truly enjoyed the book as it was an easy read, and it inserted them into a world that they had never imagined. We were able to explore different aspects of Navajo culture - something they had never explored before. \r\n\r\nWe did really fun and interactive lessons, such as, creating a code talker book, creating a boarding school survival guide, writing letters to soldiers who are currently serving, and my personal favorite: decoding actual Navajo codes. Decoding Navajo codes was very challenging for them, but they were exposed to a brand new language, and it was really awesome to see how motivated they were to crack the codes. I also created some friendly competition for them, which made it even more exciting. Sitting in a classroom decoding all of these messages was difficult for them, but it put them in the shoes of actual code talkers. I explained to them to imagine how it actually was for them being in the middle of a war, facing life or death, while decoding these messages. \r\n\r\nI am so happy and grateful that I was able to provide this knowledge to my students. We learned a lot during this unit together, and I am forever grateful to everyone who donated. Before receiving the bookshelves, I struggled with not having a proper place to store our class novels. These are the very books we read, discuss, and learn from every day. Now, our books are organized, accessible, and displayed with pride.\r\n\r\nThe impact was immediate. Students began complimenting the bookshelves as soon as they arrived and shared how much nicer and more organized the classroom looks. Several students mentioned that the space feels more welcoming and truly feels like a real classroom that values learning and reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible. Through these books, my students not only strengthened their reading and analytical skills but also learned to discuss themes like belonging, family, justice, and identity with depth and empathy. Our class discussions became some of the most meaningful I've ever seen, with students making text-to-self connections, comparing characters' struggles to their own experiences, and debating choices and consequences with maturity and heart.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom became an active, exciting experience where students were eager to annotate, share insights, and even read ahead because they were so invested in the stories. It was amazing to watch them express their understanding through creative projects, art, and thoughtful discussions. A few students who were once hesitant readers found themselves completely absorbed by these novels and asking for \"just one more chapter.\"\r\n\r\nThese moments remind me why I teach and how books can truly change lives. Thank you for helping me give my students stories where they see themselves, their communities, and their strength reflected.
