During a recent writing activity, one student who often struggles to focus was able to stay on task the entire time using a sensory sticker—an exciting and meaningful moment for both of us.\r\n\r\nStudents were immediately excited when the materials were introduced and noticed how much calmer the room felt. They quickly learned how to use the tools appropriately, and the addition of calming scents has helped create a peaceful tone during work time. Students are no longer just playing games — they are analyzing mechanics, using academic vocabulary like \"user interface,\" \"balance,\" and \"player experience,\" and applying structured design-thinking lessons to create their own concepts. The curriculum resources have helped connect gaming to literacy, critical thinking, and collaboration in meaningful ways. Donors who may use technology at home would be amazed to see students not just consuming digital content, but breaking it apart, studying how systems work, and intentionally designing their own.\r\n\r\nThe sketchbooks and drawing materials have been especially exciting for my students. Before moving to screens, they eagerly draft characters, maps, menus, and rules, which has strengthened creativity and confidence — particularly for visual learners and quieter students who have emerged as leaders during brainstorming sessions. Watching students collaborate, revise their ideas, and proudly present original game concepts has been incredible. My students were beyond excited when they first saw the new materials their faces instantly lit up with curiosity and joy. The LEGO book has inspired them to explore new building techniques, solve problems together, and strengthen their STEM skills through hands-on exploration.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things I have observed as a teacher is that this project not only encouraged collaboration but also helped students apply what they've learned in math and science in a fun, meaningful way. Currently, my students have started to plan and design a theme park. We plan to continue expanding our LEGO station with themed challenges that connect to our STEM lessons and storytelling units. Being 12 years old, you're caught between becoming an adult and still being a kid, so I love being able to pull them to my small table and they come willingly because they can sit in the \"fun\" chairs. Privacy boards have added a lovely pop of color to the classroom. Inspired by the Service Stars mission, our older students have taken on the role of mentors, reading aloud to younger peers in a warm, welcoming environment that celebrates connection and the joy of storytelling.\r\n\r\nWhen we kicked off the first reading session, the room was buzzing with excitement. The younger students gathered eagerly, wide-eyed and smiling as the older students sat beside them with carefully chosen books. One younger student whispered, \"I want to read like that one day,\" and it was clear the impact was already being made.\r\n\r\nFollowing each read-aloud, everyone shared a snack together. These simple moments—sitting in circles, laughing over storylines, and enjoying a treat—have helped build strong bonds between grade levels. It's become a cherished part of the week, where literacy feels less like a lesson and more like a celebration.\r\n\r\nThis project has strengthened reading fluency, listening comprehension, and most importantly, community. The older students have grown in confidence, leadership, and empathy, while the younger ones are developing a love for books that will carry them forward.
