For many of my students with learning disabilities, tasks that involve fine motor skills can be challenging, but when they build with LEGOs, those same skills are strengthened through play. Students are developing patience, focus, and problem-solving abilities without even realizing they're practicing essential academic and life skills.\r\n\r\nThese activities have also opened the door to learning in new ways. Students who often hesitate to participate in traditional lessons are now actively engaged, working together to plan, design, and build. They're exploring math concepts like counting, symmetry, and spatial reasoning while boosting their confidence and communication.\r\n\r\nThanks to these LEGO sets, our classroom has become a place where learning feels exciting and accessible for everyone. Now in our second week of \"Everything Is Tuberculosis\", students are not only understanding more about the world's oldest and most infectious disease but are discussing and writing about its historic understanding and unfortunate presence in our modern times due to structural failures and inequalities. While my students are working collaboratively in country teams, eavesdropping on their conversations sheds light on their varied connections with the text. In all five periods, students have multiple points of entry into the text. Occasionally, we listen to Green reading the audiobook version of his text, and when this happens, I observe some students grip the text tightly while others recline in their chairs and pull their books closer. I can't quite put my finger yet on what my students--as a class--find as the core to their intrigue or interest with the text, but I imagine it has something to do with the mirroring of their cursory scientific understanding of TB with the lived experiences of Henry, a teenage protagonist in Sierra Leone who suffers from drug-resistant tuberculosis. \r\n\r\nIn our Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (E.R.W.C.) senior English class, we discuss, reflect, write, and read about empathy, love, responsibility, care, and other values that bond us and honor visibility of individuals.
