By giving the students a chance to engage in trial and error with putting the tracks together and deciding where and how to place ramps, bridges, stations, intersections, and curves, you have furthered their capacity to be thoughtful in their design and planning and reflective in their observations of the community where we live. \r\n\r\nAs an added bonus, you helped me engage the agency of my students who offered solutions for putting together the table itself. One student said, \"My father is a carpenter. He has the tools and can help us assemble it.\" The dad, the grandfather, the student, and his sister all came to help and assembled the train table for us. I immediately put the items you afforded me to good use as part of my essential daily routine. That is where the popsicle sticks you bought me come in. I put the students' names and photos on them and put them in a little \"equity bucket.\" I close my eyes and pick one from the bucket and \"wah, la\" - the students have a sense of fairness in the knowledge that they will each get a chance. When we first brought out the 500 piece Pokemon puzzle, it was overwhelming and led to some arguing amongst the students while they were working.
