Thanks to you, our students received an incredible variety of engaging resources including fidget spinners, squishy toys, a fidget foot roller, Zen garden sand tools, sensory play sand, and even a sturdy rolling cart to help keep our Wellness Center organized. When students first saw the fidgets, squishies, and sensory items, their excitement was immediate — they loved the idea that they could use these tools in class instead of relying on their phones. These items have already helped us introduce conversations about mindfulness, self-regulation, and the simple reminder that it's okay not to have a phone in hand at all times. By practicing with these tools, students are learning to stay engaged, redirect their restlessness in healthy ways, and build social skills through shared activities.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will be incorporating the life skills cards and fidgets into advisory lessons, where students can practice responsible technology habits while using their new coping tools. In the Wellness Center, the Zen garden and sensory sand will be used as grounding and calming activities during individual check-ins, while the foot roller and squishies will give students tactile strategies to manage stress. The rolling cart has already made it easier to store and rotate resources, keeping the space welcoming and functional. Thanks to your support, our students are developing healthier habits around phone use, building focus, and practicing mindfulness — skills that will support their academic success and personal growth.","fullyFundedDate":1746634652489,"projectUrl":"project/help-civic-students-use-fidgets-to-cope/9110381/","projectTitle":"Help Civic Students Use Fidgets to Cope with Phone Use","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Romyl De la Llana","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9743287_orig.jpg?crop=2062,2062,x0,y866&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1737615538347","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9743287"},{"teacherId":9743287,"projectId":9102668,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations to our Wellness Program at Civic Center Secondary School! Because of your support, we were able to open our Wellness Center during the very first week of school. We introduced students to the space, explained how they can access services, and shared the purpose of the center — to provide a safe, welcoming place where they can connect with our social worker, nurse, therapy partners, OTTP, and other mental health or wellness supports. The snacks and life skills cards you provided have already been so helpful in building rapport and engaging students as we start this new school year.\r\n\r\nWhen students first walked into the Wellness Center, their excitement was clear. The materials made the space feel warm and approachable, and students expressed that they felt cared for and supported. Moving forward, we'll be using these resources in small groups and one-on-one sessions to continue building trust, helping students feel comfortable seeking support, and making sure their wellness needs are met. Thanks to your support, our students now have access to a well-organized, clean, and welcoming bulletin board in the Wellness Center. This space has become a vital hub for sharing important updates, upcoming events, job and internship opportunities, and valuable wellness resources. Students now know exactly where to look for information, and it's already helping them stay connected and informed in ways that are supportive and accessible.\r\n\r\nWhen our students first saw the updated bulletin board, their reactions were filled with curiosity and appreciation. They help decorate the wellness area, allowing students to create their own \"Bulletin Board\". It's become more than just a board—it's a connection point. In addition to event flyers, we have also added brochures and pamphlets on mental health, social-emotional learning, and community activities to help students feel more empowered and supported.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we'll continue using the board as a dynamic space for student engagement. We plan to rotate themes, spotlight student voices, and feature local resources and organizations relevant to our youth. Share a specific classroom project or moment.\r\n\r\nThe students are loving the new wellness space! It's become a go-to spot where they can chill, relax, and just be themselves. One particularly special moment was during a mindfulness session we hosted — students came in, engaged in deep breathing and grounding activities, and afterward, many stayed, talking and supporting one another. It's been amazing to watch how naturally they've made the space their own.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\n\r\nWhen they first walked in and saw everything, the pure excitement on their faces was evident. Some of them even said, \"Wow, this feels like home.\" They immediately felt comfortable, like they finally had a place in the school where they could relax, feel safe, and be around peers and adults who truly get them.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\n\r\nWe're building on this momentum by launching student-led wellness groups and activities in the space. They'll be planning workshops around mental health, self-care, identity, and leadership. The idea is to give them more tools to take care of themselves — and also to lift each other up.
