We are using the wood and muslin to create miniature flats that are used for scenic design. While the flat are smaller, we are using the same materials and construction process that would be used to construct a soft flat. Students will then get to choose a design that communicates an expression and specific information from a show of their choice. This is a great project for students to also practice the skill of paying attention to detail which translates to success in other areas of their life. It has also provided students a differentiated way of applying the design principles we have learned in class in addition to focusing on craftsmanship, while not making a huge mess in the process. The clipboards and whiteboards have allowed my technical theater class to explore our stage space and still get work done. We have used them for group projects and individual assignments where students have to accurate measure and describe design choices of theater and performance spaces. Additionally, we have used the whiteboards to increase engagement with our improvised scenes giving students the equal opportunity to contribute and select their ideas in the acting process.
