Students would share their crafting interests and desires, much of which I was able to obtain materials for, thanks to you all!\r\n\r\nWe have been meeting consistently for over a month now, and students have been able to learn the foundations of crochet, make funky keyrings, beaded friendship bracelets, and hone in on their drawing skills. Each time we meet, the atmosphere buzzes with creativity, laughter, and a sense of belonging. It has been such a pleasure to offer these practices to the students at Catalina. It really means a lot to us students at Catalina High School. \r\n\r\nOur new compost bin has helped so much with keeping our greenhouse clean, organized, and not as smelly. It has allowed us to make compost more efficiently without the hassle the old one used to. We used to have to roll a metal bin around on the ground to mix the compost, but now, thanks to you, we don't have to do that anymore! The club even had a great time assembling the bin together, so in the end we even got a lesson in teamwork out of it. Compost is so important to our gardening process and the balance we have with other classes like culinary is how we keep our school community connected and close. \r\n\r\nWe thank you once again, we are more than grateful for your kindness. Not only do they keep the students from relying on their phones for translation - but they honor the home languages and prior knowledge these students bring with them to school. Feeling like their teachers respect their previous educational experiences and are (in my case) interested in learning about their languages goes a long way towards fostering engagement. We don't see them as blank slates. We want to make connections.\r\n\r\nThe dual-language titles (Arabic/English, Spanish/English) are also a great way to take the intimidation factor out of reading an entire English book for the first time. My students have been drawn to the books about athletes - Jesse Owens, Pele, and Lionel Messi - as well as graphic novels like Kariba. \r\n\r\nIf you haven't had the chance, I recommend reading the graphic novel \"When Stars Are Scattered,\" which gave me a lot of insight into existence in a refugee camp. \r\n\r\nI continue to keep the books displayed around the room and have incorporated an independent reading time into our class period (I'm hoping we can build from 5 minutes to 15 minutes per session). Students in other ELD classes have also enjoyed wandering in, browsing the titles, and borrowing the books. \r\n\r\nThank you for making my classroom a place to discover the magic of reading!","fullyFundedDate":1714092194763,"projectUrl":"project/unaccompanied-minors-and-teenage-refugee/8270392/","projectTitle":"Unaccompanied Minors and Teenage Refugees Want to Read in English","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fox","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9490314_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710199734672","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ellenfox"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_62923","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":614,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":4,"percentLatinx":49,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.3,"schoolId":62923,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Catalina Magnet High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Catalina Magnet High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/tucson-unified-school-district/catalina-magnet-high-school/62923"}
