It has been a great tool to engage the class because of the large photographs, short, informational videos, phonics games, and built-in stretch breaks. It is very helpful to use to practice one-to-one correspondence. The students tell me after we read it that they took it home and read it again with their families!\r\n\r\nI let the students pick out their new galaxy test folders. This is the first time I have labeled the folders, and it has been the best idea I've had in a while. The folders are being very well taken care of!\r\n\r\nWe went to the book fair, but not everyone had money for a book. When we came back to class I gave everyone the books you donated! There are lots of smiles behind those books in those pictures. They took them home and read them.\r\n\r\nYour thoughtful donation will continue to benefit our class throughout the year. The students had been eagerly awaiting opening the packages and building the Gardyn hydroponic. It became an experience all in itself. Our school is trying to gain community partners, so I invited a retired teacher to come in and help us with this new machine. The students and I were able to build the garden. We chose from a selection of herbs and veggies, even some kale to get us start3d. For my students, many of them were unfamiliar with the greens we were choosing to be grown. \r\n\r\nEach week, the students and I go and observe if anything has grown and we record. Because we just got the garden about a week ago, due to there being a back order, it will be a bit of time until we see the fruits of our labor. This project has been exciting for our school too. We have Middle school students coming to observe with my third graders. The first graders are hoping to use it during their life science unit on planting. As a school, we are looking for ways to incorporate all that is going to be grown back into our school, such as fresh produce for salads, or in our community, like providing flowers to thank those working around us. Thank you for helping us start the new year with an exciting new way to learn this year.","fullyFundedDate":1746548664068,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-nature-into-our-classroom/9176962/","projectTitle":"Bringing Nature Into Our Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Boland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1034861_orig.jpg?crop=556,556,x25,y124&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732639613794","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-jessica-boland"},{"teacherId":1034861,"projectId":8968324,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity in proving the funds for us to grow our classroom library in abundance. The students got so excited as the packages started arriving. We spent some time browsing the new books to see what they were all about and to figure out how best to organize them. Right before our holiday break, students had their hands on them while cozying up in an area in our classroom to read. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom takes many forms. There are times when students get done with a learning task and want to grab a book to read at their leisure. During a block of reading, we might be learning a new skill or comprehension strategy. Here students have chosen a book of their interest and they are reading to practice that skill or strategy while I am conferring with them. Other times, students are engaged in a book chat with their peers discussing the characters actions to determine the theme. But, most of all these books help to develop students' imagination, their vocabulary and their creativity. The books and resources supplied through this project have created a literacy rich classroom which the students and I enjoy tremendously.","fullyFundedDate":1733228804330,"projectUrl":"project/for-the-love-of-literacy/8968324/","projectTitle":"For the Love of Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Boland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1034861_orig.jpg?crop=556,556,x25,y124&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732639613794","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-jessica-boland"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_60111","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":364,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":89,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.1,"schoolId":60111,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Whittier Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Whittier Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/phoenix-elementary-school-district-1/whittier-elementary-school/60111"}
