When students are hungry, they can't focus on learning. When students are hungry, they exhibit off-task behaviors like needing to use the restroom, or get a drink (to fill their empty bellies) because they are embarrassed to have their stomachs grumbling in class. And this year, with the implementation of block scheduling, now students are in class for ninety minutes instead of 48, making it seem longer until lunch time. If students need snacks, they usually go to our school store, which means they will miss about 20 minutes of class.\r\nHaving food in my classroom keeps my students in class for the entire time, and they are focused on their learning because their basic needs are met. Your gift provided them with a variety of snacks so they won't get bored, and I can use these as motivators to get even the most stubborn student to engage in class. Thank you so much for this food, it's made my life so much easier because kids are staying in class to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1747572346109,"projectUrl":"project/did-somebody-say-snacks/9268654/","projectTitle":"Did Somebody Say \"Snacks\"?","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Anne Marie Greer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8361109_orig.jpg?crop=1505,1505,x0,y419&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691640815487","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8361109"},{"teacherId":8361109,"projectId":9055318,"letterContent":"I am eternally grateful for this thoughtful and important gift to my kids. I've been using Upfront Magazine for years because it's relevant, vibrant and informative for my teens to find out what's happening in their world. They love reading about current events, and learning about cultures foreign to theirs. Additionally, I love the resources that are available: many articles include videos which enhance the article and gives them background knowledge on various topics. There are quizzes, primary sources and lesson plans to make my busy life less stressful.\r\nA few years ago I received funds through Donor's Choose to update my English classroom and have gotten rid of my horrible plastic desks and chairs and replaced them with comfortable beanbags and pillow seating. This allows them to work for longer periods because they are not fidgeting and making up excuses for leaving their seats. Sitting in their small groups allows for great conversations about the articles they are reading.","fullyFundedDate":1741543878970,"projectUrl":"project/put-our-kids-upfront/9055318/","projectTitle":"Put Our Kids Upfront!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Anne Marie Greer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8361109_orig.jpg?crop=1505,1505,x0,y419&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691640815487","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8361109"},{"teacherId":8670832,"projectId":9102186,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. This is most likely how we will grow our food in space since soil is so heavy. I was able to buy a few hydroponic systems to demonstrate the process. We also obtained tomato seeds from the \"First the Seed\" foundation. One packet of seeds was flown to space and the other was here on Earth. We are growing them hydroponically to see if we can tell any difference between the plants. \r\n\r\nWe bought some benches to help students enjoy the sound of the hydroponic plant and create a \"zen\" corner where students can let go of anxiety and relax in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you for bringing such a rich experience to my students!","fullyFundedDate":1737573374922,"projectUrl":"project/project-based-learning-supplies/9036615/","projectTitle":"Project Based Learning Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Heal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4509956_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1498243335857","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4509956"},{"teacherId":4509956,"projectId":9015745,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to our project! There was no complaining \"Why are we learning this?\" or \"When will I use this information in my life?\" They were so engaged! \r\n\r\nThis really brought heart disease to life for my students. This hands-on experience was truly an incredible opportunity for my students, and it made a lasting impact on their understanding of cardiovascular health and anatomy.\r\n\r\nPrior to the dissection, students built heart models and studied the structure and function of the heart, including the roles of arteries, veins, and the effects of cholesterol. Being able to examine a real heart allowed them to connect theory with reality—they observed the chambers, valves, and even fat deposits surrounding the heart. These tangible observations reinforced our classroom discussions about LDL cholesterol and its potential effects on the circulatory system.\r\n\r\nWhile there was initial hesitation (and a few reactions to the smell!), it didn't take long for students to overcome their nerves. Once they began cutting into the heart, they became fully engaged—asking questions, identifying parts, and explaining the flow of blood using proper terminology. It was a proud moment to watch so many \"lightbulbs\" go off as they made meaningful connections between vocabulary and the physical structures they were examining.\r\n\r\nThe experience has sparked a deeper interest in both anatomy and genetics. As we transition into our unit on genotypes and phenotypes, students are already asking thoughtful questions about inherited traits and the genetic links to heart disease. The dissection made learning real for them—it reminded them that science can be both engaging and impactful when it's hands-on.\r\n\r\nWe'll be concluding the unit by exploring the balance between genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices—how much of our health is determined by genetics, and how much is within our control? It's a powerful way to wrap up the year, and your support has helped make this journey possible.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for supporting our students' education and for helping us create memorable, meaningful learning experiences. With these toolkits, they are learning valuable technical skills that extend far beyond the classroom—troubleshooting hardware, replacing components, and understanding how computers function at a fundamental level. This hands-on approach keeps them engaged and prepares them for future careers in IT, engineering, and technology.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is the ability to take apart and rebuild computers themselves. Thanks to your support, we received piano books and sheet music filled with songs that my students know and love from the radio, movies, and Broadway. These materials have transformed our classroom and created an energy that is truly inspiring.\r\nThe excitement on my students' faces when they first flipped through the books was priceless. For many, this was their first opportunity to play music they already connect with emotionally, whether it's a chart-topping hit, a favorite movie theme, or a Broadway classic. Suddenly, practicing wasn't just about scales and drills—it was about playing their music.\r\nThese piano books have not only enhanced their learning but also boosted their confidence and motivation. Students who once hesitated at the piano now eagerly volunteer to perform, and I've seen them work harder to perfect their skills, driven by their love of the music. Several students have shared how proud they feel when they can play songs their families and friends recognize.\r\nYour contribution has also allowed us to explore music as a form of self-expression. Where before the students only had access to basic drills and simple melodies, they are now able to choose a song that has meaning to them because of the lyrics, how it has impacted their life personally, or because they want to develop their skills by playing more advanced music. Many of the students now have the skills to continue their studies outside of class, which means they can enjoy playing the piano as a lifelong hobby. \r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in my students and in the power of music education.
