When the students first saw the mobile whiteboards and the bins of math manipulatives, the room was buzzing with curiosity. The whiteboards, in particular, have become the heart of our daily routine. My students were thrilled by the idea of vertical learning standing up to work together rather than being tied to their desks. It has turned math into a social, active experience rather than a solitary one.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using the whiteboards for almost every lesson, but the math manipulatives have played a truly special role for my students who struggle with abstract concepts. In a recent lesson involving complex word problems, I watched a group of students who usually feel overwhelmed by numbers use the manipulatives to physically build the scenario described in the text. Seeing the lightbulb moment happen when they could finally visualize the problem was incredible. One student remarked that they finally saw where the numbers were coming from. This hands-on, minds-on approach has given them the confidence to then jump onto the whiteboards and explain their thinking to their teammates.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our next steps involve a \"Model-to-Board\" challenge. Students will use the manipulatives to create a physical representation of a ratio or proportion and then use the mobile whiteboards to translate that physical model into a mathematical equation. This process of moving from the concrete to the abstract is helping them build a foundation for algebra and beyond. Your generosity has provided the exact tools my students needed to turn frustration into \"aha!\" moments, and we are so grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1759857270568,"projectUrl":"project/math-minds-at-work-a-collaborative-clas/9409455/","projectTitle":"Math Minds at Work: A Collaborative Classroom of Thought","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9472521_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x315,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708301631197","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9472521"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_52984","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":617,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":34,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":56,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"18.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.3,"schoolId":52984,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Johnson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Johnson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/mesa-public-schools/johnson-elementary-school/52984"}
