We started some hands-on science today where we studied the different traits between parents and offspring (using pigeon cards). The students had a good time exploring and discussing the different traits they saw among the different pigeon cards. We were able to use cardstock that I had on hand and the printer toner came in handy as over summer school, they had nearly depleted my toner that was in the printer already so these 6 toners in backstock already came in very useful! \r\n\r\nWe have also done some hands-on card work last week comparing different fruit based on their flowers, leaves, seeds and appearance. Again we used cardstock that I had on hand. Being able to print these cards has made a big difference with my students understanding how traits are passed on from parent to offspring. When my students saw how many new stickers were being added to the sticker basket, they were all excited! I had a few students earn stickers already through placing 4th or 5th in Blooket reviews or by mastering 3 IXL skills. Those that got to choose stickers said they had a hard time picking just one sticker that they earned. Some have started asking me if I could hold stickers for them and I told them that as long as I didn't have a lot of stickers to hold on to, then I would, but I don't know how long I will be able to hold them if they are popular stickers, like the soccer ones. These new stickers will be a very welcomed addition to the classroom. The new school year has started this week and already my students are taking notes in math which is helping them to better grasp the new concepts. We are starting off with exponents and powers of 10 which has sometimes been a difficult concept for students to grasp but with the added notes and other websites that our district has implemented this year, my students have understood the concept faster than any other 5th grade class I have taught previously. We did a group jam from IXL and I could see my students referring back to their notes to help them navigate to the correct answer. A majority of my class has shown mastery in that concept already. These notebooks, like with all my previous classes, will be a very well used tool in class. My students really enjoyed trying to solve these riddles. Some of the riddles were easily solved within a few 'yes' and 'no' questions while others took several days to try and solve. When the connected the dots and got the answer, you could hear my entire class go, \"Oooh!\" as they realized how all their yes answers were helping to lead to the answer. To see the look on his face when they called his name was priceless. The students are already asking if there will be a Switch and game next year.
