In our English learners classroom, we implement Guided Language Acquisition Design strategies. We use a Narrative Input Chart to provide background information on the characters, setting, and plot, prior to reading the novel. During the reading of the novel, we use Expert Forms (graphic organizers) to summarize the story by chunking information as we read and annotating the text. Students read with partners and check for understanding with the teacher during the week. On Fridays, we pull small groups to reteach any confusing academic vocabulary words and we do Gallery Walks, matching, and sorting of key ideas that we read about during the week.\r\n I am introducing Hexagonal Thinking into class by using hexagons with key concepts on them and having students match similar ideas and have conversations with their cooperative learning partners. We have Socratic Seminars that defend our opinions about the characters' motives. At the end of the teacher-facilitated discussion, students summarize their own thoughts on the discussion. Most of my students are males and they appreciate reading about Odysseus, who has adventures and who is brave and athletic. I have many football players in my class who enjoy athletic protagonists. Having graphic novels makes the plot more enjoyable! Your generous contribution of art supplies made a huge difference—not only for me and my students, but now for the teacher who will be stepping into this role after me.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our art room was able to run full of creativity and possibility. Students had access to quality materials that allowed them to explore, express, and grow as young artists. Your support helped me provide a space where every student could feel confident experimenting, creating, and building a portfolio they could be proud of.\r\n\r\nWhat's even more meaningful is that the next art teacher will walk into a room that's already equipped and ready. With the coffee supplies you provided, we've transformed a small area of our room into a welcoming space that encourages focus, collaboration, and community.\r\n\r\nWe use the café as both a reward and a soft start to the day. Students can earn café time for positive behavior, academic effort, or leadership. During group discussions, reading time, or peer feedback sessions, the café creates a relaxed atmosphere that makes learning feel less like a chore and more like a shared experience. One specific project we paired with the café launch was a \"Book Tasting\" event, where students sampled different genres of books while sipping cocoa or tea, they absolutely loved it!\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the supplies set up, their faces lit up with excitement and curiosity. Many of them asked, \"Is this really for us?\" They couldn't believe they'd get to enjoy something that felt so adult and special. For students who might not always feel seen, this simple gesture made a big impact.\r\n\r\nNext up, we're using the café corner during our narrative writing unit. Students will meet in \"writing groups\" at the café to workshop their stories and give each other feedback, just like real writers in coffee shops. It's amazing how a change in environment, plus a warm drink, can change their attitude toward writing.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving us this boost. Many of my students come to class hungry, which affects their ability to focus, stay energized, and fully immerse themselves in the creative process. By offering nutritious snacks, I've seen a noticeable improvement in their engagement, mood, and overall willingness to participate. \r\n\r\nHunger is a major distraction, but when students have access to something nourishing, they can refocus on their projects, collaborate more effectively, and think more critically about their work. The difference is clear—students who once struggled to stay engaged are now more attentive, motivated, and excited to create. Productivity has reached an all-time high, with students completing projects with greater detail, care, and enthusiasm. \r\n\r\nBeyond just fueling their creativity, providing snacks has created a sense of care and support in the classroom. It shows them that their well-being matters, strengthening our classroom community and fostering a more positive learning environment. This fosters a deeper understanding of form, structure, and problem-solving, encouraging students to think outside the box. \r\nSTEM Integration - 3D printing bridges the gap between art and STEM. Students learn digital design using CAD software, understand material properties, and explore engineering concepts like balance, support, and mechanical movement. This cross-disciplinary approach helps them see how art and technology work hand in hand in real-world applications. \r\nIncreased Engagement & Ownership - The ability to bring digital concepts into tangible reality is incredibly motivating. Students take pride in their ability to create functional and aesthetic objects from scratch. The instant gratification of seeing their designs come to life fosters a sense of accomplishment and ownership over their learning. \r\nCollaboration & Problem-Solving - Students often work together to troubleshoot designs, refine prints, and learn from each other's successes and mistakes. This collaborative learning process strengthens communication skills and reinforces the value of peer feedback. \r\nFun & Exploration - At its core, 3D printing is just plain fun. It adds an element of play, experimentation, and hands-on learning that keeps students excited about creating. Whether they're printing character figurines, intricate architectural models, or abstract sculptures, the process encourages risk-taking and a growth mindset. \r\n\r\nIncorporating 3D printing into a high school visual arts class not only makes learning more engaging and interactive but also prepares students with future-ready skills, whether they pursue careers in art, design, engineering, or beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1739373525225,"projectUrl":"project/bghs-goes-3d-adding-3d-printing-to-vis/9043064/","projectTitle":"BGHS GOES 3D - Adding 3D printing to Visual Arts","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Schneider","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8379114_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1693626074322","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsschneiderart"},{"teacherId":9554949,"projectId":8422746,"letterContent":"It is with deep sincere gratitude that I share this update with you. Thanks to your incredibly generous donation, my students were elated to be able to make the REAL elephant toothpaste that they have seen on YouTube! The students first engaged in their own elephant toothpaste experiment where they were able to describe the reaction they observed, including details such as smell, temperature, color, speed of the reaction, and learn vocabulary such as catalyst, effusive, explosive, exothermic, and decomposition. These are vocabulary terms that would ordinarily not be a focus of their learning because of their cognitive ability, however, with applied learning, my students were able to define all five. After their small group experiments were complete, we went outside to take part in the big elephant toothpaste activity using a huge graduated cylinder and also a narrow neck jug. Students made predictions about how each would react and then delighted in watching the reaction and touching the foam after it cooled. Thank you for making this experience possible for them. They are so deserving. This is an incredibly supportive, kind, and optimistic group of students that make me smile each day. With tools like glue, scissors, and other crafting materials, combined with engaging texts like The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, my students have been able to creatively explore complex themes in ways that resonate deeply with them. One of the most powerful projects we've completed was a collage activity where students worked in groups to represent the novel's central themes - such as identity, social justice, and community - through imagery and symbolism.\r\n\r\nThis hands-on project brought the story to life. Students carefully selected images, colors, and words to convey the struggles and triumphs of the novel's protagonist, Starr Carter, as she navigates two very different worlds. It was inspiring to see them take ownership of their learning, using art as a way to express their understanding of the book's messages. One group created a powerful visual representation of the theme of finding one's voice, with a central image of a megaphone surrounded by symbols of both oppression and hope. These collages not only deepened their connection to the text but also sparked meaningful discussions about how these themes appear in their own lives and communities.\r\n\r\nYour support made all of this possible. The students loved the opportunity to combine their creativity with their critical thinking skills, and they've gained a new appreciation for literature as a tool for self-expression and advocacy. One of the most exciting outcomes has been watching students debate characters' motivations and draw parallels between the text and their own world, making reading a truly interactive journey.\r\n\r\nYour donations have made a world of difference for my students, especially for a few who have discovered a new passion for reading. One student, who often struggled to stay engaged with traditional texts, shared how much they connected with the characters in our new books.
