When the new books arrived, the students could barely contain themselves. They were so excited and couldn't wait to get their hands on these books! \r\n \"Read to Self\" time is the most popular time of the day! During this time, all students are 100% engaged in reading their book. They can choose two books and read only the two books they chose for the entire 15 minutes. The students do just that. You can hear a pin drop during the \"Read to Self\" block. \r\n Since receiving these books, I have seen a surge in interest of reading with my 2nd graders. Research provides a strong impact in reading and comprehension achievement when students have structured daily independent reading blocks with followed comprehension instruction. Studies have also found that students who demonstrated self-regulation while reading had higher language and literacy skills and contributed to developing higher decoding skills and in-depth comprehension of what they read. \r\n The high interest books that have been donated through Donors' Choose, have had and will continue to have a significant positive impact on my students. These books have ignited an excitement and desire to read, and contribute to the development of self-regulation while reading. Both help develop higher levels of reading achievement.
