In our classroom, reading is more than just decoding words—it's about building comprehension, making connections, and thinking deeply about characters and themes. With these new books, we are practicing important skills like identifying the main idea, describing character traits, comparing perspectives, and understanding how a character's actions influence the story. These texts also help us have meaningful discussions about empathy, identity, and fairness, which are essential lessons for my students as they grow both academically and socially.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and student-centered. You might see students gathered in small groups discussing a chapter, independently reading books that truly interest them, or responding in journals about how a character reminds them of themselves or someone they know. We also incorporate partner reading and teacher-led instruction to support all learners. The excitement these books have brought is truly special—students are more engaged, eager to share, and motivated to read for longer periods of time.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, in particular, have found a deep connection to these new books. Some who previously struggled to stay focused during reading time are now fully immersed because they see characters who look like them or share similar life experiences. One student proudly shared that it was the first time she felt like a book \"was about someone like me,\" which has boosted her confidence and enthusiasm for reading. Moments like these are why your support matters so much. You are not just providing books—you are opening doors, building confidence, and helping my students see themselves as readers.","fullyFundedDate":1767631850609,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-books-to-life-in-our-third-grad/9798661/","projectTitle":"Bringing Books to Life in Our Third Grade Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. April Clifton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9885498"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_13283","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":425,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":42,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":13283,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pinecrest Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pinecrest Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alabama/sylacauga-city-school-district/pinecrest-elementary-school/13283"}
