Through examining everyday situations encountered at school in the garden, students were able to problem solve and create to meet a need.\r\n\r\nAllowing students to spend time thinking critically about the world they live and work in was so engaging and meaningful as students were able to discuss with peers about the most reasonable use of their energy to solve the problem. \r\n\r\nThe fact that students had access to a 3 D printer was a true example of giving students the tools they need and they will determine how best to use the tool in their world, to make life more sustainable. Many students in this class do not even have access to a laptop or computer at home, so this opened their minds to the possibilities of ice and learning.","fullyFundedDate":1733347809003,"projectUrl":"project/engineering-sustainability-in-the-school/8940356/","projectTitle":"Engineering Sustainability in the School Garden","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mack","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2922841_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1649213778666","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2922841"},{"teacherId":9080516,"projectId":8529579,"letterContent":"We are very appreciative of your donations to our classroom. Since we operate a school garden throughout the year, this donation allowed students to really take a look at how things in the garden actually work. They were able to understand more about the soil, and how the moisture and temperature of the soil makes a difference in plant growth. They were also able to compare this to the use of a hydroponic, versus a raised bed garden or even an AI chamber garden, as we use all of these at the school. This middle school thrives on teaching students the art of true sustainability, from a planting and community perspective. Students were also amazed at what they could do using the microbit, and learning about it's sensors and how that interpretation of information comes to help them know what a plants needs are and being able to think about this in terms of AI intervention in planting. The next steps for the students are to embark on a year long study into the use of AI Chambers in the planting process, as many do not transplant and survive as well as they do when being grown in a hydroponic like environment such as this Kitronik garden. This mini scale look in depth at how important it is to monitor the plant soil/moisture, to ensure successful growth rate of plants has been the biggest increase of knowledge students have made.","fullyFundedDate":1732649999150,"projectUrl":"project/tech-tools-for-garden-sustainability/8933147/","projectTitle":"Tech Tools for Garden Sustainability","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mack","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2922841_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1649213778666","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2922841"},{"teacherId":2922841,"projectId":8980104,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations allowing students to put a spotlight on their progress in the garden. The yard signs were used to create signs labeling the various types of crops posted in the garden, as well as the vocabulary students learned while tending to that particular plant.\r\n Additionally, the students created a winter wonderland garden tour for guests to view and harvest crops grown in the garden. Students were very excited about creating garden vocabulary signs and garden crop signs and would practice explaining or telling guests funny little stories about their planting endeavors. \r\nThe stand up signs were placed at key spots to greet the guests on the walkway to let them know which direction to walk in to see specific garden features. There were several raised beds growing purple cabbage, green cabbage, and okra.
