We have been using the calm down corner items at least two to three times a week during my groups. The students use the sand and sensory toys a lot to get calm before going back to class. We are utilizing the bean bag chairs often, I kept one in my office as well which has been used multiple times a day, it has provided a more relaxing and fun place to sit while sometimes talking about heavy emotions and thoughts. My favorite moment so far was when one of our Special Education teachers took one her students who needs extra support throughout the day to the calm down corner and he loved to touch and feel all of the sensory items that I have on the bulletin board and it helped him calm down and get to better place to transition back to his class. I was so happy for him because he struggles with transitions during the day and because of the calm down corner, he was able to get to class with minimal issues. \r\nAll of the students who have been around the calm down corner have loved it and are utilizing it to its full capacity. I am still in the process of creating a more permanent spot for our calm corner but I am excited to get it up and running for any student who may need an area to relax and be able to transition back to learning! My plans are to have more items the students can utilize and make it more known throughout the building that this is a space that can be used for any and all students in need.","fullyFundedDate":1765202549352,"projectUrl":"project/wes-calming-corner/9580212/","projectTitle":"WES Calming Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zumalt","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6937076_orig.jpg?crop=402,402,x347,y185&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1572979503511","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6937076"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_57694","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":503,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":75,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":33.7,"schoolId":57694,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Whittier Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Whittier Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kansas/kansas-city-kansas-city-public-schools/whittier-elementary-school/57694"}
