Our school provides breakfast every morning to our students. This is a great program but not every family is able to take advantage of this free breakfast due to a variety of reasons. I do not know how many times a hungry child has come to my office, our nurses office, or one of the principals' offices due to hunger, and not only in the morning, but all throughout the day. We all know that it can be hard for kids to sit through class and stay focused, especially if they are hungry. This is why I like to provide snacks for my school. Imagine going to school without breakfast and having to wait until 12:30 to eat lunch. Most likely your endurance will be down, and you will not be able to engage as well. Meeting the basic needs of the students is my number one priority, and that starts with food. As the School Social Worker, I usually do small groups each semester with one in the fall and a different group in the winter. Last winter, I did a Grief Group that went extremely well, and teachers are asking if I will be doing this group again. I am planning to do this. We recently had about a dozen of our students affected by a shooting; they lost uncles, step-fathers, and cousins. I would love to have more materials this year to help my students grieve in a healthy way. I also have a mindfulness/ yoga group going on right now and could use some materials for that as well! I adore my groups and look forward to getting to know more students. I am so grateful for my students and any help we can receive.
