First, engagement was super-high because each student had their own comic book. They found this to be so cool, and they were so excited to learn that they would be able to take them home at the end of the school year.\r\n\r\nNext, the comic books helped students to organize their thoughts. When we were planning formal, narrative writes, we used the comic books to layout the stories. I could see their comic and then evaluate it against their writing and be able to point out ideas that were in the comic but were missing from the writing. This really helped students with their writing skills and getting ideas from their thinking out into sentences. That is more challenging than it sounds!\r\n\r\nStudents also grew in their confidence as storytellers and presenters. Students were able to creatively write their own narratives. Then they would revise the stories and make their pictures sharper and . Finally, they would present their narratives/comics to their classmates. Their fear and anxiety was held in check as they showed off their professional looking writing and drawing.","fullyFundedDate":1764200152031,"projectUrl":"project/creating-comics-and-cultivating-confiden/9922080/","projectTitle":"Creating Comics and Cultivating Confidence","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Armstrong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5576401_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1547284589119","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5576401"},{"teacherId":7708431,"projectId":10058898,"letterContent":"Panda Express was already a popular spot for our staff with take out lunches on busy days. You see my city is situated along the foothills of a larger mountain range, and a mining company had destabilized an area of those foothills where they were drilling. As a result, one side of a section of the foothills began to slowly slide. This threatened about 100 homes, a set of train tracks, two different highways, and the natural flow of the nearby river. The students were tasked with designing a structure to prevent the destruction of the highways from a landslide.\r\n\r\nUsing the materials in this grant, such as the cups, wooden coffee stirrers, cardboard sheets, and masking tape, students were able to engineer a tunnel-like structure that would protect the highways. Seven out of eight student groups were successful in their designs. The lone failure came when the group's tunnel was too short the landslide covered the openings. One group's design was so sturdy that a student could actually stand on it.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing the opportunity for these students to practice their creative thinking and problem-solving skills in a real world scenario.","fullyFundedDate":1762267734802,"projectUrl":"project/protection-from-the-landslide/9726458/","projectTitle":"Protection From the Landslide","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Armstrong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5576401_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1547284589119","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5576401"},{"teacherId":7708431,"projectId":9633177,"letterContent":"While our Family Night raffle has not yet taken place, these baskets are already having an impact! My students were beyond excited and pleasantly surprised to see our newly donated classroom rug. The moment it was unrolled, their faces lit up with joy, and they couldn't wait to gather on it together. It has already become such a special part of our classroom. A few of my former students even stopped by and, with a bit of amazement, asked why they didn't have a rug like this when they were in kindergarten!\r\n\r\nThis rug has truly transformed our learning environment. It has given us a comfortable and welcoming space where we can come together as a classroom family. We now have a designated area for community circles, where students can share, listen, and build connections with one another. Carpet time has become something they look forward to each day, and whole-group lessons feel more engaging and inclusive because everyone has a place to sit comfortably and focus.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, this rug has helped foster a sense of belonging and togetherness. It's more than just a piece of furniture—it's a space where conversations happen, friendships grow, and our classroom community is strengthened. Your support has made experiences like these possible, and it has had an immediate and meaningful impact on my students.\r\n\r\nOur kindergarten family truly appreciates and loves our cozy new classroom rug.
