My vision is a world where all students believe that science is meaningful and relevant and are confident in basic science practices. \r\n\r\nAddressing the challenges of providing inclusive and meaningful opportunities to \"do science\" for students is multifaceted and complex. Due to the significant impact of teacher instruction on student outcomes, my emphasis is on the key factor of instructional resources that shape teacher instruction. I am trying to create a shift from \"learning about\" to \"doing\" science. Research state that \"Doing science\" encourages students to learn science through the use of science practices such as asking questions, analyzing data, and constructing explanations based on evidence and reasoning. \r\n\r\nAnother shift I am trying to make is connecting science to students' everyday lives.\r\nAccording to a 2018 national report, only ~⅓ of secondary science teachers report that increasing students' interest in science and learning about real-life applications of \r\nscience is a heavily emphasized instructional objective. To meet this objective my goal for the project was more investigative and meaningful labs. In the past my labs focused on task-completion, which can limit critical thinking, student agency, and authentic inquiry. They are also often disconnected to broader science concepts. Students' own perceptions of themselves as a \"science person\" can influence their interest, achievement, and persistence in science. \r\n\r\nI am seeing all of these goals happening in my classroom. Students test scores are up 20%, engagement is up 100%, and students actually talk about how much they love Chemistry. Students feel like scientists and more importantly want to be scientists.","fullyFundedDate":1723597505533,"projectUrl":"project/bite-sized-education/8554900/","projectTitle":"Bite Sized Education","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9626883"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_97988","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":3155,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":18,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":77,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.0,"schoolId":97988,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Westlake High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Westlake High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/alpine-school-district/westlake-high-school/97988"}
