As an alternative education teacher, our students come to us with a variety of struggles; emotionally, mentally and sometimes physically. They are in need of a \"home\" where they can fit in. Our program gives them that feeling of security. If they want to talk or to just sit and take a break, they are allowed to do that here. It has been an honor and a privilege of mine to work with such amazing young men and women over the last 19 years of my career. \r\n\r\nOver the past nine years I have financially supported a snack bin in our classroom myself. They are always hungry! The generous donation our classroom received was welcomed by every student! Everyday they ask for ramen noodles, cookies, poptarts and fruit snacks to name a few. We will have enough to make it to the end of the year and we donated some of the ramen to our \"backpacks for vacation.\" This program supports our students with the greatest need with food during our time off from school. We are all so very thankful! I am eternally grateful for Donors Choose over the last two years. We sorted them into plastic bags - each bag had fruit, snacks, ramen, easy Mac n' cheese, cereal, granola bars and pop tarts. It was enough breakfast and lunch for a couple days. We had between 50 and 60 bags. \r\n\r\nFirst, I went to our classrooms with students who have a lot of special needs and was able to give those students each a bag - we know their parents struggle quite a bit with therapies and care taking much of their household budget. \r\n\r\nNext, the day before our February break; I sat near the door and distributed bags to any students that felt they needed them. I had students say thank you of course. But I also had comments like \"can I look in the bag, I want to make sure there are things my sister will eat too\", and \"I really feel cared about\" and \"this will really help.\" We were able to protect kids dignity by having it be voluntary (many students walked by and did not take a bag) but also provide help to those who needed it. The bags were gone in less than 10 minutes. I had more students come by than I could help. \r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough for your help and donation.
