With these books, our students were able to analyze characterization, symbolism, and author's craft within their book clubs. And while they could have analyzed these literary features with another title (last year, we read Great Expectations), with our pieces of modern literature, students were able to relate better to the situations in their modern novels. Our student body is very diverse-- racially as well as socioeconomically-- and their diverse experiences were reflected in their books. Finally, because we read multiple titles in book clubs rather than a single, whole-class novel, students were able to select a title that aligned with their interests, increasing student buy-in from the beginning.\r\n\r\nIn our classrooms, we read in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, students discuss their reading with their book club. These conversations are documented in assorted ways (see photos). The purpose of these tasks is to give students some structure around which to organize their discussion. \r\nI've had several students tell me that their modern novel was one of the best books they've ever read. And one of the goals of my class is that my students become readers, making the leap from YA literature to adult literature. Your donation allowed my students to read books that adult readers actually read (not many people are picking up Great Expectations for fun anymore).\r\n\r\nThank you so much!","fullyFundedDate":1758802387493,"projectUrl":"project/beyond-the-canon-contemporary-reads-for/9752610/","projectTitle":"Beyond the Canon: Contemporary Reads for AP Lit","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kirkendall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/650913"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72408","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2187,"numTeachers":106,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":77.8,"schoolId":72408,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Ottawa High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Ottawa High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/west-ottawa-public-school-district/west-ottawa-high-school-north/72408"}
