We used them last week, during the \"Resiliency Project.\" They worked well and were a hit.\r\n\r\nThis was the last project for the semester and the first time students got to pick their own partners. They love picking their own partners, so enthusiasm was high from the get-go. They also got to choose their own topo-map. These are large, real topographic quadrangle maps from the county office, laminated for classroom use. When students choose, engagement increases. Also, since the maps are local, their familiarity is compelling. \r\n\r\nBut by far, students' favorite part was marking up the maps. They got to write all over those things, keeping their map for 3 days and adding annotations in wet-erase marker every day. They labeled highest elevations, lowest, and shaded in all land that would be submerged with a 5ft sea level rise (a lot of land in our county!) With dry-erase markers, this would not have been possible, as annotations would erase. Permanent markers don't clean up at the end so future classes can use the maps. \r\n\r\nThey marked the areas most susceptible to flooding, wildfire, and drought, and they \"re-zoned\" their map area for residential, commercial, and agricultural, evaluating impacts and mitigations for each land use. They then presented their \"Resiliency Plans,\" attaching the map to the board and answering a question each from my list of questions.\r\n\r\nAnd NONE of this would've been possible without the markers. So thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1778114232763,"projectUrl":"project/vis-a-vis-for-kids-to-see-the-future/10244285/","projectTitle":"Vis-a-vis for Kids to See the Future","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Waugh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10056771_orig.jpg?crop=2850,2850,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751995920548","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10056771"},{"teacherId":10056771,"projectId":9488589,"letterContent":"Thank you for the resources. Students were excited about the periodic table, which is now hanging on the classroom wall. They asked about when we would be using it in class, which occurred this week, as we identified elements in greenhouses gases. \r\n\r\nWe also used the infrared thermometers in this unit, measuring the temperature of surfaces outside to see differences in albedo. Students LOVED using these thermometers, as they give an instant-read when pointed at each surface. They were surprised to find differences between the yellow and red parts of a sign, for instance, or the asphalt and concrete. Students were able to construct an explanation for how reflection and absorption of light led to these results.\r\n\r\nWe look forward to using the water quality and soil kits later in the semester, and for students' individual research projects. They are always excited to use real supplies, collecting their own data and interacting with the materials.","fullyFundedDate":1758855844025,"projectUrl":"project/fun-science-supplies/9488589/","projectTitle":"Fun Science Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Waugh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10056771_orig.jpg?crop=2850,2850,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751995920548","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10056771"},{"teacherId":10056771,"projectId":9414833,"letterContent":"Thank you for sponsoring this World Map for my classroom. This map takes up an entire wall, from ceiling to floor, an immense, memorable, tactile learning aid for students in Earth and Environmental Science and Marine Science. \r\n\r\nToday, students taped their plate tectonics projects to the map. They each hand-drew and cut out a major tectonic plate, color-coding its edges by boundary type and labeling tectonic features. They then participated in a \"Plate Walk,\" cruising the room to meet their plate neighbors and evaluate their interactions and the features each caused on the other's plate. Today's finale, taping their cut-out plates on the map in the correct locations, creates a compelling display of student work and a student-made visual for learning Earth's plates.\r\n\r\nWe will use this map again in the next unit, as we tape up ocean current arrows, then again in each unit this semester, into next year and the distant future.
