They were especially awed to have Walker talk to us over the phone to break the exciting news to us!\r\n\r\nIt was a milder winter in respects to snow, but we did have some chances to use the materials from the project during inside recesses. But it has been a WET spring and we have had to stay inside a lot recently. Twister has been a big hit, but also Guess Who and the Kendamas! Students also want me to pull out the \"RAINY DAY\" bin if they earn free time or finish projects early. I've given in once, but I try to keep these items extra special by saving them for a rainy day. \r\n\r\nThanks again! We want students to love learning, not fear failing the first or second time they attempt something. This is different from the traditional expectations of school, where they take a test, get a grade, and move on instead of trying to master a skill and improve their scores. A learning experience like that breeds low self esteem, anxiousness and a need for perfection the first time - which can lead some students to loose motivation to even try.\r\n\r\nYour generous donations to fund this project is helping my to play an active role in this revolution as I provide an environment with materials that help students understand that they are here to learn, even if it takes a few (or lots of) attempts! We use the whiteboards multiple times a day. They are primarily used during who group instruction with vocabulary and grammar as well as math, but they have them readily at hand in their desks to pull out during group or independent work as needed.\r\n\r\nThank you again! Most of the books are in our classroom library and are available at anytime for students to use. I have just introduced a project that they will begin working on after Winter Break. This project is a biography about a person from U.S. History who has made an impact on America and/or the world. I encouraged my students to start getting ideas of who they might want to research by looking through those books.\r\n\r\nAnother way that we have used the books purchased with this Donors Choose project is learning about how children and youth living in the past experienced historical events. A set of books that include excerpts from journals and memoirs of those children and youth include events such as exploration of the Americas, living during the revolution and civil wars, westward migration of pioneers, and going to school as an African American during the struggle for civil rights. My students have been able to connect with those who share their stories in these books! \r\n\r\nI know that educating our youth on the truth of history and explaining their own role in the future is very important!
